Just replaced my original battery last month (2006 model, not sure when the original was installed/dated). Maintenance-free original still had the green bubble, first start of the day was a slow crank, drove it 120 miles to the Bay Area where it finally gave out. Autozone sold me a "Super Start" (made by Exide) same capacity battery with 3-year extended coverage for $115.

On my first gen the original battery lasted me 10 years. About 145k Miles... I couldn't believe it, 2nd battery lasted 3 years lol

While pricing is an important aspect of buying a replacement battery, you should also consider the following checklist:

    1. Application and Driving Habits--If you are off-roading then the addition vibration can prematurely kill a thin plated, high CCA car starting battery. Deep discharges will also destroy a battery designed for starting.

    2. Freshness--All batteries have natural electrochemical self-discharge and are perishable. Temperate and plate chemistry will affect the rate. Unless the battery is periodically recharged, do not buy a new wet lead-acid battery that is over three months old and recharge & test it before installing it.

    3. Size--The battery has to securely fit without hitting the hood and the cables have to reach the terminals.

    4. Cold Cranking Performance (CCA)--The battery should be able to start your engine in the coldest temperature you may encounter. Heat kills batteries due to accelerated grid corrosion and cold reduces performance and capacity.

    5. Capacity (RC)--Reserve capacity or battery weight is a good ways to determine how much lead is in the battery. Battery service life is often prolonged with thicker plates with more lead.

    6. Type--Matching the battery type to a vehicle's healthy temperature compensated charging system will generally insure longer life if there is good maintenance (adding distilled water, periodic external "topping off" charging, and corrosion prevention when required). Using OEM recommended BCI Group Size is a good starting point. Often a Group 24F will replace a 34 and 27F will replace a 24F should you require more performance or capacity, but size matters. Do not use a sealed wet battery in a hot climate because you can not add distilled water.

    7. Warranty--Free Replace warranty is an good indicator of quality and prorated warranties are used by marketing to continue selling their batteries, often at enhanced cost.

If you want more detail on the above, see Section 7 in the Car and Deep Cycle Battery FAQ on www.batteryfaq.org.

I have a 2012 DCSB with 37K and the battery is already half dead by what the dealership said on my last oil change. Sad day.

On my firebird I had a 3000 watt amp and an 800 blasting and it lasted 4 years!

I completely agree with you about online pricing that is lower that in-store pricing with free shipping to the store. Most of the time when I take a screenshot in of that store's online pricing they will price match. If it were me I would order the $81 battery just so they have to go through the ordering process. It will probably be delivered out of their existing inventory. I would check the date code to insure that is not greater than three months old and have them test it before accepting the battery. If less than 90% charged, I would have them top it off. With the price of lead, you can sometimes get a lot more on the core from a recycler that the dealer. A group 27F is a good choice for colder climates, especially for $81 for a three year free replacement battery.

I've had good experiences with the walmart batteries and they'll install it free if you don't want to do it. Die hards were great many years ago and then went to crap, but I hear they're back. Don't know who made them at any point. I've heard the Toyota batteries come from different manufacturers which may explain the wide difference in life we've seen here.

Just replaced the original Panasonic from 2005.
I killed it leaving the ignition on and fan running.

    Mine lasted 5+ years.

    1. I'm supercharged which means the water pump for the supercharger's cooling is cycled on and off even when sitting parked, and off with no keys in the ignition. Generally not an issue unless you let it sit for weeks at a time.

    2. I've killed it at least once leaving my ARB fridge plugged in overnight.

    3. I've left my dome lights on overnight more than once.

Very happy with the overall life and performance of the stock battery. After a lot of research I decided to go w/ a Duracell battery from Sam's. Cheap and gets good reviews. Perfect for my needs. I'm over overpriced "specialty" batteries that never seem to give me what's promised and usually the opposite.

In days gone by, all of the Toyota's I bought new came with Panasonic batteries - made in Japan. They lasted much longer than any of the common brands sold in the U. S.
I once contacted Panasonic and asked for a U. S. source. I was told they were not available in the U. S.
