Hey Cody, I did the modification to my truck's relay.
If you need a hand locally doing the mod, let me know.

All I did was squeeze a small piece of rubber on the back of the pole to where they’re touching. There is no flex room so it has permanent contact no matter what. It’s worked for the past 11 months and I can always just take that out and go back to stock if I ever wanted to. Basically free mod.

After I did this mod, I was not thinking about exact wtf I had done.

I bought a 12v 2 x USB socket plug to charge our phones, and left it plugged into one of the 12v sockets in the cab for weeks. This ended up killing my battery and could have burnt my truck to the ground.

The 12v USB socket things are not meant to be left plugged in and on forever, mine failed in some strange way. When I was trying to figure out what was wrong, I pulled it out of the socket it was so hot it burnt me.

    :cookiemonster:

    Just food for thought.

Question...wondering if after this is done...could this be an option to run a fridge while the truck is off? Of course, goes without saying upgrade the battery....but I've seen where many people are running their fridges on one battery....

i wouldnt trust the cig lighter socket for that duty cycle of a fridge......my usb charger gets warm just charging phones while driving....I'd just get a stereo Amplifier wiring kit and run a good hot/ground to the area of fridge and you can disconnect when not used or just pop fuse out of + cable when not using and fridge is removed...tuck wires away and your good.

This is a great write-up! Start to finish, this took me 15 minutes, which included waiting for the soldering iron to heat up. I also popped the finished relay in the next slot over, which is the power window relay - that allowed the windows to operate without the key on. Just FYI.

I thought I’d add a few pics as well. I was going to make a thorough write up with a lot of pics but quickly realized that would take way longer than actually doing this mod.

Once you undo the three 10mm holding the fuse panel on, you can pull it back enough to see the relay in question. I was able to use my fingers to get it up enough and then used a flathead screw driver to pop it out.

To take apart the relay there’s two little tabs. You just use a flat head to pry it apart a little and with some finesse it easily comes apart. No real force needed.

The hardest part of all this was getting the solder in there.
