Buzzy Vibration at certain RPM's..read before buying!

I installed the damper just after the dip under the t-case and before the connection to the next joint. It helped a bit I think, but it wasn't night and day different. I havent played around with position on the exhaust pipes, so it's likely not in the optimal poition.

Changing to premium gas without ethanol has had a much bigger effect. It keeps me out of the problematic rpm range, and even when in the range, vibes are less. It takes a while for fuel trims to readjust after switching to 91 octane, but it works for me.

My guess is that with the right amount of exhaust dampers at the right spots, the issue would largely resolve itself. It's a resonace issue, and that just takes damping in the right spot to correct. Someone that has too much time on their hands and is too anal retentive, just needs to put in the work (locating optimal spots for dampers) to solve the issue for the rest of us.

 

Have the same vibration and have installed the damper to minimal effect as well as applied dynamat to the pedal/floor. Dealer noticed and acknowledged the vibration (7/25/19) but could not locate the issue and diagnosed it as an engine/exhaust acoustic vibration unofficially (could not replicate - on paper).

My question, does anyone have the TRD cat back exhaust or aftermarket exhaust(s) (mods) with this issue? Could it be the stock exhaust causing the resonance? Also does the PRO have a different y-pipe and dump tube than OR,Sport,SR5,SR (I don't believe it does)?

 

My 2019 Offroad has it. Buzz buzz buzz at 2k rpm. Doesn't bother me very much its very minor and most times I forget all about it.

 

Without reading back through 129 pages into this thread did anyone ever figure out if this was normal for these trucks? Mine defiantly has it but it doesn’t bother me very much. I’m just debating weather or not to bring it up at my first 5k miles service.

Is it safe to say this is a normal characteristic of the truck?

 

It's not "normal" for the gas pedal to buzz / vibrate.

 

And some do it more severe than others. Mine is pretty prominent but I've learned to deal with it. I don't like it but, whatever.
My gf's Rav4 does it too but it's slight and doesn't transfer to the gas pedal and steering wheel. I can feel it through the armrest/console.

This is why I think it's the TC. It seemed to get a little better after the latest release of OVTune too.

 

I may have gone off the deep end, up to THREE dampeners, will see where this goes.

I have it before and after I installed my TRD exhaust. Same 2100rpms.

 

Based on my research Iv come to the conclusion that more trucks have It than do not. Iv been on multiple Facebook groups and talked to multiple owners and I’d say about 70-80% of the owners Iv talked to about it report that they can feel it to some degree. I even had one guy tell me he likes that’s hes able to feel the engine and know what the trucks doing.

I stopped at 2 different dealers asking about this when I first bought my truck and I test drove 3 of these things and I could feel it in each and every one of them. 2 sports and another OR like mine. All 2019s.

I also believe it’s not hurting anything and it’s just one of the quirks we Tacoma owners will have to deal with.

 

Installing the damper on the pipe before it dips under the TC significantly reduced the vibration buzz. I still feel normal vibrations which seems more of driveline vibration. I had the damper close to the muffler and that did nothing.

 

Before it splits or after? On the cross pipe or the passenger pipe if after?

 

On the driver side only. I squeezed it right beside the TC. Well Before the pipe dips down under the Tc into conjoining to one pipe. Tight fit but got it on right there. Figured it would be best to get it as close as I could to the floor board where the vibration suffers and it’s helped a lot . I may even add another one. 2.5 inch exhaust clamp and damper is all you need. I’ll mention again with this improvement I feel other vibrations but not the buzzing one nearly as bad. Not bad for 50$ IMO considering there is no real fix. I will also have the trans fluid level checked soon and will even consider the OV tune people are talking about. Ultimately I think better engine mounts and dampening the exhaust will help the most. I’m just glad my foot doesn’t hurt after driving anymore.

 

Thanks for this man. I had the damper toward the rear and moved it to where you said, I believe. I put it on the drivers side exhaust as it comes down off the manifold.
The buzz is not totally gone but it's very tolerable now.

On a side note, I bought OVTune last year and while it didn't help with this situation (I thought it did at first), it sure helped the drivability of the truck. Power, shifting, everything is better. I wouldn't hesitate to get it.

 

I have a 2017 TRD Sport. This was a MAJOR issue for me when I got my truck, back in 2017. The steering wheel would shake/vibrate and get to the point my arms were numb. Long story short, Chicago rep came up eventually, said nothing was wrong. I hired a lemon law lawyer and he was ready to file the case, as this process took almost a year to finally get to that point. Independent technicians drove my truck and said this was NOT normal. The problem eventually started to become intermittent. I'd drive the same route, same weather, same day, and once in awhile the shaking was GONE! Next trip it was back. I decided to live with it. Gradually after about 10K miles the issue was more gone, then shaking. Gradually it got to the point where only once in a great while it would shake. I have 28K now, and once every month it does the shaking. Throughout the dealers attempts to solve this they tried everything.

Meanwhile I have ordered a new 2020 TRD sport, with more bells and whistles. They gave me a phenomenal price for my 2017. I test drove one of the first 2020's the dealer got off the truck last week and the steering was perfect, actually better than mine ever was. Has this been secretly addressed at Toyota and fixed? Needless to say on my contract, I will test drive the new truck when it arrives (late October) and if I feel ANYTHING in the steering the deal is off.

During my issues in 2017-2018 I test drove many off the lot and most of them shook. Bad. Toyota refused to acknowledge this was an issue.
I just love the truck and am looking forward to the 2020, with added features. Please don't let this happen again! I have owned a 1980, 2001, and 2017 Tacoma.

 

Just as a data point, I have NOT experienced any vibration on mine so it may be the stock exhaust.

 

I haven't had any shake, other than a front end wobble not long after I first got mine. They did a road force balance and it was gone. But there was also a stretch of highway I drove every day that it did it the most on.
Anyway, even after new tires since then it hasn't come back.

This is all about a buzzy vibration in the gas pedal and steering wheel. There is no shake per se, and you can't see it or hear it, you can only feel it.

 

Let us know how your '20 works out. I'm planning on getting one as well, probably in the spring, and the more information we have the better. Thanks.

 

I will definitely be on here when my 2020 comes. On my 2017, the steering wheel actually shook. I have videos of it. When I have the chance and find it, I will try and post it. I gradually went away, after 2 years. It was very odd.

 

My guess would be that the 2020s will have it to varying degrees just like all of the other 3rd gens. I have driven a ton of them and some you have to really look for it to feel the buzz while others it's more prominent. I chalk this up to tolerances from the factory. Some more, some less. I have never experienced any numbing so I feel like my 2019 is somewhere in the middle. I have also noticed some days its very prominent and other days I don't even notice it. This minor annoyance won't steer me away from my taco. I absolutely love it. If this was a Lexus doing this then that's different.

The buzz was there back in 2015 when the first 3rd gens came out and I'm willing to bet it will stay until the 4th gen comes out.

If it really bothers you then you need to find a truck that doesn't do it as prominently as others or wait for a 4th gen.

 

I wouldn't call it a vibration. Its more of a slight resonating buzz.

Picture this: placing your hand on a table while a cell phone vibrates at the other end of the table. You would be able to pick up a slight buzz sensation traveling through the table. Thats the sensation.

If you drive around 1900-2100 rpm and really look for it you can find it. it can sometimes be felt ever so slightly in the steering wheel or the gas pedal/floor. Engine/exhaust harmonics if you will. Hard to explain. It sounds like you have one that not a noticeable as some others.
