Possible Oil Leak?

Hey guys,

Got off the phone with my local dealer and got told that there’s a $139 diagnostic fee required when I take my truck in. Is that true? I can’t imagine it not being covered under warranty but I would hate to be out $139 and be stuck with a leaking engine. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

 

I would try a different Dealer as they should not be charging anything under warranty.

 

They told me it would be voided if it’s found to be under warranty. I wouldn’t pay it up front, but would sign an agreement stating that I would pay it if it isn’t under warranty. Should I go somewhere else still?

You mean they wouldn't charge you the $139 if covered by warranty........I hate to say it but this practice is more and more common. I find it disgusting and $139......that's seems like a lot.

I called another dealer 45 minutes from where I live and they said that would charge $45 if it’s found to not be covered under warranty. The advisor did tell me on the phone though that Toyota doesn’t consider seeping to be an active oil leak, as other TW members have stated. That was super discouraging to hear.

I may bite the bullet and go to my local one as the advisor sounded a lot more helpful and when I mentioned seeping he didn’t hesitate and told me to bring it in right away and they’d be happy to help. I can’t imagine it not being covered, just by looking at the pictures one can tell that something is leaking that SHOULDN'T be on a 2 year old vehicle.

Yep, Any professional know this.
• Class I Leak: Seepage of fluid, indicated by wetness or discoloration, not great enough to form drops.
• Class II leak: Leakage of fluid great enough to form drops, but not enough to cause drops to fall.
• Class III Leak: Leakage of fluid great enough to cause drops to fall.

 

My power steering pump looked like yours for about 30k miles then finally started dripping about 3-4 drops a day. At that point the dealer replaced it under warranty. Had the same issue on our ‘16 TRD Pro 4Runner about two weeks after the Tacoma. The pump takes about a 1/2 hour to swap out. Parts wear out it is just the way it goes. Do the warranty dance and get it replaced.

 

So you think it’s the pump and not the engine? I checked the pump fluid and it hadn’t changed since I bought it, but I was low by almost a whole quart of engine oil so i figured that’s it. Hopefully they don’t send me away with “it’s normal” because a two year old vehicle shouldn’t have any signs of fluids leaking.

 

Looks more like an oil leak that is collecting on the PS pump.

 

The timing chain cover oil does end up under the power steering pump. I thought the same thing at first, a pump leak with my truck. Closer examination, plus a full power steering reservoir pointed to the cover leak.

 

The PS pumps on the 2nd gen 4.0 did the same thing, it just accumulates the oil from the timing cover.

It's a timing cover 100%

 

Thanks for the replies guys! I’ll update you all tomorrow when I take it in the morning. Keeping my fingers crossed they realize this isn’t normal by any means and take the appropriate action and repair what’s causing the leak I looked at it more and I do believe it will be the timing cover, appreciate you all!

I'd be happy too to take your $139 for 5-10 minutes of my time to tell you it is "normal" seepage and not covered.

 

Hey everyone, just wanted to update you all.

Took into my dealer this morning at 8, just got a call from the advisor I’m working with. He said it’s a “small leak/seep” but the shop foreman said it has to be fixed before it gets worse so they’ll be ordering all the required seals/parts and it’ll be a several day job as they have to pull the engine out.
Super stoked I didn’t get hassled whatsoever, took it in and they’re taking care of me. Thanks all for your advice and help with this matter!

Next question, I have the extended Toyota platinum warranty. Is there any say in what choice of vehicle I’ll be able to get while they repair my truck?

 

I would guess that you do not have a choice in the vehicle selection. However, I am not familiar with the terms and conditions in the Toyota Platinum contract. You might want to read over the warranty to see what you are entitled to.

But with that being said, this repair should be part of your basic Toyota Powertrain warranty. The coverage is for 5 years or 60,000 miles. The extended warranty becomes effective once your basic warranty expires.
