Chestnut Mountain Road Runs

It was closed Memorial Day weekend. Me and a buddy tried to camp down there then. A week prior someone posted here that it was open.

 

Where was it closed at?

 

Bear Creek Camp Road if I remember correctly.

 

Bad news. Road (Bear Creek, I think it's called) to get down to the lake is permanently closed/gated. Pics from today, they put a new sign up.

 

Side note: The offshoot that goes to the power lines is pretty fun. Some deep ruts!

 

Damn that sucks. One less place to ride.

 

Sucks. Glad I got to ride it At least once before they closed it.

I wonder if it was because a huge group of jeeps went down it the day Jacob and I was there?

 

Could have been from more use. Definitely sucks, I was hoping to drop in with the kayaks again. I'll be exploring Musterground Rd when it opens next month so hopefully it'll have lake access

 

I posted a vid a while back of the lake access at underground. Unfortunately, the last leg of it you have to walk. Looks like it's close enough to carry some kayaks down.

So I'm going to be camping at Jocassee this weekend and was thinking about doing some dirt on the way back to Asheville on monday. Any recommendations. I was looking at Mt Auger but wasn't sure if it was open of if I could even get to it from where were camping.

Chestnut Mountain Road is open and Auger Hole road is open up until the bridge crossing - I believe it is still closed there. There are 2-3 decent spots to camp by the bridge/water. However, with it being labor day, they might be taken. If you're camping Monday night everyone will probably have cleared out though.

 

Can you kayak at the campsites by the river to the lake? Or is the river to low without any rise from the rain?

 

Maybe downstream after a rain, but good luck getting back up!

I was thinking getting someone to pick me up. Not trying to paddle back up it.

 

There's vid on YouTube of a guy going down the creek at the pipes in bad creek. Pretty crazy.

 

Isn't there a waterfall there at the end?!?!
