AC not performing well while stopped in my 2018 OR

Yup. Let the cabin bleed off some of the heat when you first get in by leaving the windows or doors open for a few minutes.

Also, the A/C takes 5-10 minutes to really get nice and cold when the truck has been sitting for a while in the heat. Don't expect it to get ice cold in 30 seconds...

 

There is a really simple way to remedy this issue which is often overlooked.

I used to experience this issue and to an extent I still sort of do, but the vehicle has to be incredibly hewtsoaked to do so now. The issue is the clutch driven fan assembly cannot move enough airflow at idle to shed the heat build up the AC condenser needs to release in order to keep the temperature lower.

The engine bay is pretty trapped of airflow and if you want better airflow you need to allow a better release of that heatsoak. The most effective mod you can do during the summer is to remove the weather strip at the cowl which is at the rear of the hood. It is a 30 second removal and will allow to shed some of that air that cannot escape at the rear of the engine bay. Reinstall during winter to keep water out from the firewall area.

Additionally, if the 3rd gens are anything like the 2nd gens they have a garbage tin can roof which could use some heat insulation. Some dual layer heat insulation specific (mass loaded vinyl followed up by Dynamat, Noico or something similar) over it will help keep that heat from loading in through the roof.

If you have a sport hood you can open it up some with a Dremel to allow further heat ventilation.

Also a heat shield if you are parked at idle or just while you are away from the truck will work wonders on drastically reducing interior temps prior to even moving which will allow the AC to have to work less harder than it needs to, which is the name of the game in the first place.

It's a multi step issue which combined nets some fairly impressive results at idle. I used to sit between 50-60 idle and after doing these things I sit at a nice 40-43*F while standing still at idle. The difference has been quite dramatic and I only wish I did these things sooner. It's better to be proactive because the design as is (at least for the 2nd gens) is subpar at best.

I don't completely disagree with you, but my wife's 2014 4-cyl Camry gets cold in 30-60 seconds. I get that it's a different car, different system, different everything, but it's the same company.

I'm hoping that someone who has gotten this TSB performed can report back if it helped.

Uh, what do you think?? Of course it wasn't 113 for 24 hours, but it's not like it's only 113 for a minute, and then drops below 100, smartass.

A)I don't drive my truck for 24 straight hours and 2)when I AM in my truck, and it IS 113, I would like my AC to perform better.

My car prior to this truck was a 2001 BMW 328Ci. Here in Texas in the summer, the AC coming out of the vents in that thing was ice cold in under a minute.

Loved the AC in that thing. Unfortunately, at 112,000 miles the head gasket blew and I finally sold it and got my Tacoma.

I don't care that you don't have anything helpful to add, I'm trying to find out if anyone who has gotten the TSB done has noticed an improvement.

 

It's been over 100 deg. here in central Texas pretty consistently for the last month and my truck has handled it fine. Blows just as cold at idle as it does when moving. I'm guessing they will find something wrong when you take it in

I'm not sure. One thing you can try, at home, after you've driven the truck for a while and its hot, is putting a house fan in front of the radiator and measuring vent temps with the A/C running. Measure them before and after the fan is turned on.

 

No worries about the old thread. Doesn't everyone tell people to use the search function anyway? But that's good your truck runs cold at idle. Gives me more info when talking to the dealer.

FYI if I have the fresh air on, my truck doesn't blow cold air at idle either. When coming to a stoplight, a few seconds after stopping you can feel the vent temps rise at least 30-40 degrees, to the point where I start to feel hot.

When it's on recirculate, it doesn't do this, so I just leave it on recirculate in city driving.

 

Excessive hot days ( I’ve had the 110-119 days)

Cool down faster:

Start truck and turn on AC full and roll down all windows ( make sure recycle is off)

Wait a few minutes and then roll up windows and turn on recycle.

That’s it. It’s only going to get so cold idling in traffic or stop and go on those days. Even on the freeway in the desert on 119 degrees even if your truck interior is 85 degrees 30 degees cooler!

Things to check and remember

I change my cabin filter every 20k miles or so. So check yours. It’s like cleaning the lint trap in your dryer. The cleaner it is the more efficient it works. Being in this heat I need it to work at 100%

Window tint ( high end ) actually reflects heat AS WELL as shade interior.

Black (darker colors) attract/absorb sunlight. I bought a new white accord because the surface temp of the paint was 30 degrees cooler than the black one. (Think hot black top vs white concrete) My BLACK DASH board was always hot to the touch so it’s radiating heat while I’m trying to cool of the inside. You can get heat reflective clear tint on the windshield to help with that, I did ($200). And if your driving a black Tacoma with a black dash board with black interior? That thing is a magnet for sunlight and heat. You may not like the look but you can put a dashcover of a lighter color like blue which will help a lot over a black dash radiating heat. Just food for thought

In construction in the deserts I can appreciate a cool ride home. After 30 years I figured out all the causes and effects.

My truck is almost always on recirculate, but thanks for sharing! (no sarcasm implied, lol)

 

Recycle does just that. Recycle. You don’t want to recycle hot air, that takes twice as long to cool. Allow heat to escape then recycle. My earlier post really breaks down how to get the most out of our ac.
I hate the heat and Bythe, Indio, Coachella valley and I even helped build the solar power plant in Mohave desert in Hinkley. This isn’t Death Valley or furnace creek but it’s close.

 

I'll give that a try. The truck defaults to recirc whenever I turn it on, so I have to make a note to turn it off.
