Spare tire lowering tool

    As with all used tacomas, my spare tool kit is mysteriously missing. I'd like to be able to get my spare down. I've heard those kits for 2005+ tacos work, but I've also heard the opposite. For those that don't have their original spare kits, what do you guys do?
    (I did search the forum, but only found one 2nd gen thread that had any relevance.)

    I am fairly certain that they haven't changed the spare tire tool kit since at least the 80's.

    The ones I see for the 2nd gens look exactly like the one for my 2004 Taco, and even the 86 4Runner I used to have.

    Both the tool kit and jack were missing from my Taco when I bought it. I posted a WTB thread right here on TW, and another member was nice enough to give me a great deal on a tool kit he had in his parts stash. I found a bottle jack from another vehicle and tossed it into the cubbyhole behind the seat, along with the tool kit.

    Shift Sense Pro, HomeLink Mirror, Screen Protector, Tinted Windows, Now onto the expensive stuff
    The 98 I just bought has the jack but not the tool kit for lowering the spare. I just ordered this. It doesn’t say it will fit a 98 but I think it’s the lug wrench. I’m pretty sure the lowering tool and the extension bar will work. My 98 needs the partial round hook at the end of the tool. But I’ve seen some of the lowering tools on the 4Runners that need a square tip and wouldn’t work with the hook end tool.

    I’ll report back if this works or not. It’s returnable if it doesn’t.

    Check to see if there is a tire lock on the spare tire, some trucks like mine came stock with it and u need a special key to get it to work

    Defrost mirrors, compass/temp display rear view mirror, rear wiper on camper shell, trans.cooler.
    I was just working on my neighbors Ford F150. The Ford spare tire tools plug together
    like a socket wrench. And they should work & fit Tacoma's.

    Much better than a bolt like Toyota.

    I've had the misfortune of getting a flat a couple of times, but found the OEM bottle jack/tire iron/lowering tool & rods to be immensely helpful. Those OEM Toyota lowering tool & extensions are designed to fit through the hole between your tailgate & OEM bumper. If you have a custom bumper, you would have to go under the truck with one less extension rod to lower your spare tire.

    Fabbed up my own. A 1"x1" square tube fits pretty well. I did have to grind the end a little bit though.

    No, if it has a lock like mine you will not be able to engage the shaft to lower it at all.
    Scrap yard they cost 25-45

    is that a better quality of frame paint or do you know?

    It’s more of a black weathered to gray. Any green is from the photo lighting/upload/etc. The members (cross & frame) seem rust free, with no repaint covering it up (fingers through the closed box holes have the inside as smooth as the outside).

    I’ve had it since Feb 2019, with zero previous history, so I’ve had to figure out everything.
    If it’s some coating or paint, I know nothing about it.
