I don’t believe that’s true. 87 octane contains more BTUs than 91 octane fuel per gallon.

Yep, I switched to premium a few tanks ago, and the difference is very noticeable.

I haven't noticed any power difference, but the engine runs smoother and I get better MPG.

I get more out of a tank with 90 non-ethanol than any other pump gas. I put 5 gallons of 114 in the other week. That just made the exhaust smell good.

Last week I filled with 93 and didn't notice anything different throughout the week. Today I went back to 87 because I felt it wasn't worth the extra money to feel the same. Maybe every once in a while I'll fill up with Shell vpower to do a little cleaning but won't be often, if at all. I always just make sure it's top tier gas every time and have no issues.

Show me please. It might be like two btu's out of 11,000 or something. Not anything worth mentioning. Octane is not something used to increase power.

Higher octane fuel absolutely makes a difference. Anyone who claims otherwise does not have a full understanding of modern engines.

Yes it makes a difference but it has no appreciable additional energy per gallon of gasoline. What it does is allow the timing to be automatically changed in your vehicle because knock sensor, which at wide open throttle, will allow a few more horsepower.

Correct. The difference, specifically with respect to produced power, is likely most significant at WOT however it is not isolated to it. Different octanes allow for different ignition timing across the entire throttle map.

Bicycle (aka bike: any vehicle that runs on two wheels). In my case, a Ducati 1098S.

You might be confusing motorcycle culture with Harley culture, two very different things. Harley riders, glorified by Hollywood and Broadway, use different slang-ish terms for bikes much like trendy homosexuals might do with objects or people e.g., "hog" vs "bike", "girlfriend" vs "numbnuts", etc.

When someone is insecure about something, say, their sexual orientation, the first indications of that will be in their choice of euphemisms/slang. There's nothing wrong with that, I'm totally serious.

But yeah, "bike' is a commonly understood and correct term in performance motorcycle circles.

What seems to be most commonly available here locally is 87, 89, and 93 octane.
For several years now I've been using the 89 octane in all my vehicles. I have occasionally used either the 87 or 93 octane.

I honestly could not tell any difference. :anonymous:

That, and this thread, makes me wonder why I keep paying extra for the mid-grade. :notsure:

    Old habits die hard.

I've always said that you should put in what was recommended by the manufacturer for your vehicle, but I agree with the truck running better on premium. It's not as noticeable to me near sea level, but going through the mountain passes or with a heavier load I definitely notice that it runs better and gets a little better mpgs while doing so.

I did the math comparing several tanks on regular vs premium, it's still cheaper to run regular even with worse mpgs because of the cost of premium, but the cost is worth it to me.

I agree that its a waste to run more octane than the motor needs but i kid you not it changed the dead spot in the throttle from the first 1/2 inch or so of almost nothing to driving like the ECT is on and i have tried it both ways now and other than the shifting faster in ECT mode its feels the same driving around town. I am running 92 oct. from now on. May try the none ethanol gas. My 500 hp. Mustang runs better on 93 ethanol gas than it does on non and that is a 1/4 testing. I remember the chevron 102 octane that my corvette needed with 11 to 1. With lots of lead needed for the valve seats and no ECM bad a lot of knocking if you didn’t run it. I feel the power difference with the 92. Enough said.

I believe the 87 oct. re-tarts the timing and the 92 advances it. I have used 1/2 tank of the 92 now and well fill again with it. It shifts very good now and stays in 5th until 62 mph or when you let off of a easy throttle. My truck and i have bonded now. Grin

    A few.
This could be a logical explanation. If you're familiar with motorcycle and/or atvs, one of the performance enhancing mods is doing a timing advance as the timing is using retarded for emissions purposes from the factory. Advancing it gives u more power.

The new engines have a anti knock sensor which retards the timing when pre-ingintion occurs. Higher octane is needed with 11-1 compression. Its a sales gimmick i think. My 435 hp mustang is not happy on regular gas but the manual says it can run on it just not very well.

no, i guarantee you there's a real difference once the ECU adjusts the timing advance
