Hey all! New member here, just purchased my 2019 TRD Pro tacoma and I am super excited to start using it for off-roading and camping.

I have been looking into options for covering the bed so it is secure, along with getting a roof top tent to put on top of the bed. Originally, I was looking at reinforced caps like the ARE HD series. However, I am starting to realize that I may want to look at tonneau covers with racks. I need advice on a combo of a tonneau cover with a rack system on top of it that can handle the weight of a roof top tent. I am concerned that some folding covers will not be able to fully fold with a rack system on top. What combo of rack system plus tonneau covers work for you guys?

    Thanks!

KBVoodoo makes a bed rack that works with tonneau covers. Search through this site and you'll find plenty of discussions around it.

I haven’t had any problems out of my KBvoodoo rack along with my truxedo truxport tonneau cover. Works great. Mobtown makes a system also. Only 2 companies I know of that make this kind of system. Someone may know of another company. I’m going with a diamondback cover if I can find one used in the future just because I’m nervous about ripping my soft cover.

Have you had any of the powder coating problems with your kbvoodoo rack? was thinking of getting some bed bars form them but a few people said they rusted out pretty quickly.

Mine are a year old and no powder coat has come off yet. They still look new TBH. I live in VA and we get 3-4 snows a year so I expect mine will last a good while. I put my RTT on them, ski rack with fishing rods in them and strapped some 2x4s to them also. No problems here yet.

That seems to be the consensus around here that the KBVoodoo is the way to go! I will definitely look into that. Do you know if it works with most tonneau covers? I personally want to stay away from soft covers but worry that if I got a tri fold of some sort that the folds would not clear the cross bars. In that case, I would probably want a retractable but I am not sure if the KBVoodoo would work with a retractable.

KBVoodoo does work with some retractable ones. They have a list of approved tonneau covers on their site: https://www.kbvoodoo.com/tonneau-cover-fitment-guide

Others not on that list work as well; just have to email them to ask and they can typically give you a yes or no. Or you can buy just one of the brakcets for $15 and if it works they will take that bracket off your total price when buying the full rack.

I'm going to do the same, tonneau cover, KB rack and a RTT.
    BakFlip MX4 $1000
    KB Max Modular Bars $475
    KB MX4 adapters $150
RTT Yet to be chosen: $800 - $1300

So for around $2500 or so, depending on shopping used or new, I'll have a great setup that I can hopefully sell when my Go Fast Camper finally gets built, which will be at least a year.

I was considering the same, was going to go with a Pace Edwards Ultragroove tonneau with Yakima rack. The only problem is the tonneau won’t work with DECKED.

Pace Edwards Ultragroove retractable tonneau: $1397
Yakima Overhaul HD with track kit and 68” bars: $850
