I was working at a Ford dealership when these came out. Wasn't impressed when I drove them. Dealerships don't like them because they compete with F150 sales and that is Fords money maker. I was also laughing when our dealership was getting advisories of pending recalls because they didn't want to fix the trucks before they left the factory. Why buy a Ranger when they are priced in F150 territory.
When I bought my 17 Tacoma it was down to it and the Frontier and Ridgeline. I passed on the Frontier only because of the way Nissan was treating their buyers who were having trouble with CVT transmissions.

Actually saw my first ranger in the wild today. I've seen like five or six gladiators thus far, and about as many frontiers running around my area.

The bedrails on that thing alone are a deal killer. I'm 6'3", and I'm not quite sure that id be able to reach into the bed with the tailgate up. o_O

Speaking of bad choices, what's up with Ford's ergonomics? I was issued a company F150 for a 2 day trip. I actually liked the handling, the "enhanced" stiff feedback of the wheel gave it a solid feel for a full size. But the controls... The controls were a shit show. Who in the hell designed a six-button panel on the steering wheel just for cruise control? Six?? The time it took me to look down at the wheel, figure out which button reduces speed, look up again, I was almost up the ass of the car in front of me. I've driven a lot of brands, but I still haven't seen many cars that can master the intuitive no-look controls like Toyota can.

I think you're on to something. When they first came out I was surprised how expensive the middle and top trims were. You can definitely get a new F150 for the same money especially if you time it right and get factory incentives. The other reason I think it isn't selling is the drive train. I think most people shopping the Ranger against the competition aren't sold on a turbo four cylinder in place of a V6. Looks are subjective and could factor into it, but yeah numbers that low are kinda surprising.

It’s because there isn’t many true mid-sized enthusiasts with enough education and wisdom to select the truly superior Ranger, over the terrible Tacoma, or the aging Frontier. Those who are woke, bought the Ranger, which is the best looking, best performing, most bad-ass vehicle ever made by humans, including the military of any nation.

JD Power is where I go for all my info.

I don't know why they can't figure out the lack of sales. They circled the problem on the front for anyone to see...

    Too few to list.
Probably because the Frontier is the only new truck that can be had for around $17.5K with the 4cyl, RWD, manual.

It's just a bland, uninspired POS truck. Ford deserves low sales for taking such a lazy approach at reentering the midsize truck market, one of the hottest markets in the automotive industry right now.

If they want to play with the big dogs, then they need to sit down and do some serious homework.

The sales guy I bought my F-150 from told me he wanted to like the Ranger more but it's one of the vehicles they came out with where he wasn't sure what they were thinking. I will say I bet the drivetrain is fantastic, but I didn't care for the interior or exterior styling at all. They would have done well to make it more like a mini F-150, but I expect they were afraid to eat from those sales.

I bought my F-150 over another Tacoma because it had more power, better MPG, and basically equivalent features (more in some areas) at about the same price point. I love the 2.7 and 10-speed--tons of power, nice linear throttle, good shift points, averaging about 23 MPG in the summer, etc. It's also super comfortable and quiet and Ford did a nice job with the infotainment. That said, the build quality isn't as good as the Tacoma. It isn't as big a gap as I expected but I have had a few rattles I had to chase down.

Now, if this was the reboot, I could get behind the launch. But sadly, Ford gave us plain Vanilla.
