Do you actually offroad that thing?
Nice. So obviously you have experience between 4t and 2t, whats your preference?

damn idk that is a real tough one, I love them both honestly
the sounds smells and power band of 2strokes give me a smile that a thumper simply can not
but I am no pro so if and when I screw up the 2 stroke can bite and boy it can bite hard
I've already owned a couple efi thumpers, it is really hard to complain about how smooth and amazing they are

I guess it ultimately comes down to what bike and what terrain specifically, but if and when I buy something again the 4 strokes drive a hard bargain

You only ride mx typically? I do think 4t will always rule for myself there. But people make 2t look so easy in the woods, hardly anyone using 4t at high levels

lol sadly I think I typically ride up and down the street pissing the neighbors off mostly
but really I would ride anything anywhere anytime
IMHO those guys that make 2t look easy are just that good at riding and I suspect they would make a 4t look like a stroll in the park just as well
there are a lot of upsides to both though depending on a number of factors, if I was a better rider and a better mechanic I can see why the 2t is king

it is really tough and just damn near impossible, to have one dialed in bike that tackles everything

    the obvious solution though

    need more bikes !!!!

I haven't rode dirt in years, definitely miss it. I want to get a quad again someday, and a dirt bike too lol

Skill definitely has a lot to do with it. Im just some mediocre rider anyways

Id think it takes a better mechanic to deal with 4t than 2t. Much more to get in time and clearanced
    Always the solution

oh yea definitely more parts to a 4t engine over a 2t engine, and I would agree it takes a mechanic with a bit more knowledge than your simple 2t tech to work on a 4t...

I was simply saying as far as me being a better mechanic (both 2t & 4t) to keep a 2t running right it takes shorter maintenance intervals when compared to a 4t, though I also know there are people racing / running 4t hard and maintaining them just a frequently as a typical 2t

so much fun, and really taking out the little guys and sharing the sport with kids makes it a lot of fun when they are all enthusiastic and getting after it
I instantly regretted selling my last quad upon getting there, definitely easier to jump back on a quad than a dirt bike. I took a few laps on their little honda 250 quad and was able to manhandle the thing around, the ktm had me working hard if I wanted it

yesterday and today I have been in a world of pain, I have never cursed getting in and out of my tacoma as much as in the last 48 hours

Sadly I'm part of the crowd that bought an "adventure " bike and street ride it pretty much with the exception of some gravel roads. I think I would if the people I ride with would but nothing too rowdy. Ive only put a couple thousand miles on it but I really do like it so far.

Well they are great bikes. I had an older 1200RT and was so impressed with that bike that I wanted to stay with a BMW boxer and liked the style. I haven't been disappointing. I'll probably switch to more street oriented tires when these wear out

Location is a big factor. I plan on retiring in Utah or Arizona in a few years, will definitely get a T7 or 790. Here in NC, no point. A YZ250 or WR450F is too much bike honestly for the trails here, much less an adventure bike. Never see them on the trails out here.

Was working on my bike yesterday and broke off the spark plug. Got to finally test out the square screw removers, worked like a charm. Pulled it out in less than a minute!

Glad you got it out ! You're correct about location. We have nowhere really to ride a bike that big off road here in southern Indiana. My daughter lives in Colorado now so I do plan to make more trips west. I'll be down in the Smokies on the 7th until the 10th or so for some road riding.

Wanted to put a couple up of my bikes. Really one of bigger reasons I came back to a truck. Trying to use a Forester to pull a trailer is lame. Kept it for 6 years and had to go back to a truck. Still use a trailer most of the time, but this pulls it so much better and can use a hitch rack for the smaller bikes if needed.

Tenere - Street and forest service roads. Also great for two up with the wife.
    Tenere1.jpg

DRZ 400 - main off road beater. Small sprocket up front 14 tooth, larger in the back by 2 teeth. Top speed on the road is around 55mph keeping the engine comfortable but you can drop the clutch in 1st and crawl around off road. All aftermarket suspension.

Trails bike for when it gets really rocky.

That is a nice ride. I'll have to try one of the BMWs someday.

Where are you headed in the smokies? I've done a few trips down there, LOTS of nice roads.

We stay in Townsend. Only thing I know for sure is that we will hit the foothills parkway and then 129 one day. We will ride through the park to Cherokee and ride Blue Ridge another day and then who knows. Ride during the day and sip some bourbon at night maybe !

Isnt maintenance really just piston swap typically? New reeds some of the times? I thought that stuff was 40+ hours typically.

Im at 38 on my 450f and havent cracked it open at all yet though.
No hate from me, i was just curious.

It depends I guess, I understand a top end 2t rebuild is straight forward but still something I have not tackled let alone be able to hammer it out in a couple hours. Plus maintaining a carb as well, super simple but still not as easy as an efi setup. A 4t just needs less attention imo. Aint nobody got time for mixing gas anymore right? I've never done anything serious enough to run anything other than pump gas either.
my last quad, I sold it to a local TW members son who was planning on using it more than I did, really really regret getting rid of it at times.... I sold it real cheap.
