Applying Fluid Film

That garden hose is frozen harder than a whore's heart from about November to March. We go for weeks when the daytime temp seldom goes above freezing. Those are the days that the lines are out into the streets at every car wash!!

 

Is it required by law to wash you car in winter in New York?

you leave that garden hose attached to the outside faucet when them temps get to well below zero you be asking for a whole another mess with a busted water pipe

Well, no, but in the matter of a few snowy days of driving, vehicles all become the same color, a crusty white, gray/brown, comprised of salt, mud, and road grime. So, you have to wash whenever you can.

I believe that they have a "plastic" protective layer on top. Mine get protected by my running boards, as well.

 

what did or do you do to rustproof the running boards? ... obviously not the FF
I cannot say I have ever seen an older 10+ years of running boards or nerf bars that weren't crusty

 

These were originally polished aluminum, but they have been painted flat black for their life. New coat about once a year.

 

good visibility through all windows is a +positive+ for the wash
although now that I hear these places use recycled water I am hesitant to use anything except for the spot free rinse!

Is FluidFilm safe on plastics.
Is it safe to spray over wiring harnesses etc?
Or should you avoid any wiring running along the frame?

 

that POR15 did not yield very good results!

 

I had bad luck with POR-15 when I used it on my rocker panels and door bottoms on my '96 Thunderbird. It seemed to work fine for the first month or two, then the rust came back with a vengeance. I applied it correctly in a clean and dry environment, and prepped the surfaces correctly as well.
I thought it was something I had done wrong, so I used it on my '94 Ranger and had the same results - the rust came right back, even when applied to surface rust.

It was a let-down considering I spent about $40 for just a quart of it. Also, the paint had separated inside the can while it sat on the shelf, so there was this liquid solution with a big, gooey mass sitting at the bottom of the can. I had to stir it using a high-speed drill and a spade wood bit (lol) for like ten minutes just to blend it back into a correctly mixed coating.

I would rather use FF twice a year and have peace-of-mind from that.

It should be fine on plastics, and might even be beneficial for wiring harnesses to act as a water-displacement agent. Consider it like a coat of wax, which is usually harmless and has no caustic or acidic properties to it.

 

i have not yet porked on the POR-15 although it has been suggested to use on more than one occasion
your comments will dissuade me from going that route, from that one year showdown challenge video it seems its just as 'thin' as the Toyota defective paint is!

 

Everything I've read has pushed me away from POR-15 people have too varied results for my liking. Everyone seems to like fluid film besides the fact that people complain that it washes off to easy.

 

the FF is not a 'paint' or permanent or semi-permanent sealer but a combo of both is probably a good route?
do you have one of those replacement frames?
FF is probably not a good thing to have on if you want to put better quality paint on

 

I was just going to fluid film it once in the spring after winter and once in the fall to make sure its on well. No I don't my frame is original. I still have a lot of my gunk from the recall on it, which I'll probably wash it off the best I can then use fluid film

 

Wow I went through all of this several years ago. POR 15 never worked for me. Not that I used it on my Taco frame, but every other time.... I painted all my frame welds with Rust Bullet. Sprayed the inside with that Eastwood frame coating and found it to be pretty good. Been using FF for 3-4 years now. 04 Taco relocated from South Carolina to MA. FF works good if you use it every fall after pressure washing the under body..... What I have not seen in the posts above is the real value using FF provides when you need to do underbody service and take stuff apart. It comes apart WAY easier when you use FF regularly. This alone is a great value in using it.
