To me, the height of the platform was determined by what I wanted to store under it.

Mine is on top of the wheel wells and lip going around the bed.

I used 3/4" plywood and like the support going around the bed gives it.

I also think you will pick up a lot of weight to support the outer edge of your platform just to save 3/4" in height.

Actually its kinda like a cooler, the aluminum and the wood must really insulate and keep the heat out, I've been out on some full long hot days with it and the water and even all my gear feels ice cold when i grab it outta there

    Thanks!
zero road noise so far, it is not fastened down, i do have a plan to do so but right now its not completely necessary, haven't been jumping my truck or doing much crawling thus far, just a fishing/hunting transport, its heavy enough to weigh itself down, and then its fairly easy to take out in 6 pieces that fit together

I did it on my last truck by hanging the cross pieces from angle iron but then you lose the support of the wheel wells. The lowest I'd go is the top of the cubby doors. Tried it higher as well with blocks under the ends of the cross bars. An inch gained isn't enough to make a difference to me, still a foot too short, but if it works for you...

pretty happy with it. Need to get a new foam mattress though, existing one isnt cutting it. I also have a 1/2" rubber stall mat between me and the 3/4" ply. Super glad for the added height in the canopy, cab level would make it too tight

Didnt build the shelves as a sleeping platform so much in mind, but it worked great!

Bear with me, hope this works right. First time really posting pictures. But this is the idea I've had in my head for a while now. I just wanted a simple lightweight sleeping platform and it's worked out great so far especially with the Rightline suv tent.
Nothing is bolted down, the main two sheets are pressed in and hold each other in place and supported by 2 2x6's. The extension is held in place by two interlocking z clips and the pvc legs are just set inside bigger pvc plugs.

Seeing so many adaptations to sleep in a short bed ... I am glad to have the long bed. :)
