Like an idiot, I left my 2017 Sport unlocked last night and of course, someone rifled through my glove box and took some stuff. One of the things taken was the tailgate key. Does the tailgate key only work for the tailgate on the 2017s and not the doors? If it works the doors then I am going to have to re-key the truck. If it's only the tailgate, then I do not care.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am hoping that 2017s might be different but not holding much hope. Anyone with a 2017 willing to check for me?

I'll drop this here, I have a 2016 OR. My fob key works for the drivers door but NOT the tailgate so I had to get a tailgate specific key cut which was done at the dealership. The tailgate key I have I don't know if it fits the driver door.

I had a 2016, tailgate key was different. Currently own a 2018, tailgate key is matched for that one. I was informed that this was new for 18's, so i want to say, uninformed-like, that the 17's did not have matched keys. Try it for yourself, take the fob key and attempt to lock the tailgate.

Tried the Fob key and it worked both the door and the gate. But I think that the "tailgate" key was longer so might only work for the tailgate.

Hm, yeah my tailgate key got lost and my fob one did not work in the tailgate which is why I ended up having to get a new one cut.

    I just tried it.
    They are interchangeable.
Short door/fob key works on the tailgate.
Long tailgate key works on the door.

Thanks for checking, I appreciate it. Looks like I am buying a cylinder kit from Toyota. :(

    All the things!
Seconding the confirmation. In 2017 the Tacoma changed to have 1 key operate all of the locks. You'll want to re-key. Or sleep in your truck with a shotgun.

Just checked. My 2019 tailgate key works in door. I had it inside the truck but, have now removed it. This thread may have prevented my truck from being stolen.

While my truck was at the bodyshop for 55 days, it was car prowled and everything of value inside was stolen, including the tailgate key which I kept in the center console. I have a 2016 Sport. Do I go to the dealer or a locksmith for a new key?

Either will work. Locksmith will probably be cheaper.

If it was my truck, I wouldn’t want a new key, i’d want all the lock cylinders replaced. Unless you’re comfortable with a thief walking around with anytime access to your truck.
I would think that the body shop should be paying the locksmith bill too.....

You can’t start the truck with the key fob key or the long tailgate can you? So how can they steal the truck with the tailgate key? Good reason to have push bottom start.

Sounds like a police report or bad shop review at the least to me!

Oh, I filed a police report. But in the course of the 55 days, the truck went to the body shop, the local Toyota dealer and the local Firestone. All of them said it did not happen here, and of course there is no video. Given that the body shop and the dealer have locked fenced storage, I suspect it most likely occurred at the local Firestone, where the vehicles are parked in the strip mall parking lot. There was no damage, like a window being smashed, the lock pulled or the door jimmied, so I think it was either an inside job by an employee, or they forgot to lock the vehicle. I am filing a claim against their garagekeepers liability, but I don't expect I will prevail, since I cannot prove at which location the car prowl occurred.
