Bryan has been the only person in this entire post who knows what he is talking about. You guys need to head over to bitog...perhaps you may learn something.

He is a well respected member over there because...he knows what he’s talking about. Those disagreeing with him in this post are making it very clear that you have little to no knowledge on the subject

    Stock and staying that way
I am sticking with the recommended 0w20 as long as the truck has the drivetrain warranty. It would suck having to pay for an engine because you thought a different oil was better.

Since I live in Texas I might switch to 5w30 for the 60k change. But honestly I doubt there will be any issues running 0w20 in it.

As for those saying the thinner oil causes sludge, I am straight up calling bullshit.

    Nothing wrong with that plan.
0w20 is adequate. Hell I am running it right now in Texas summer.but for the last time.
Warranty will not be denied for higher viscosity use as long as it meets the quality requirements. (SN ILSAC GF5 for the Tacoma).
I prefer the higher viscosity for 3 reasons (increased MOFT, higher HTHS in case of cooling system failure, and all the sequence tests have been applied to the lubricant) . There is even permission to run a higher viscosity grade in your iwners manual if you read past the Mandatory CAFE language where Toyota is obligated to push 0w20 because that’s what they used for the MPG testing sequence.

Plenty of examples of 0w20 at 10k intervals not being a problem long term with the 1gr fe in the 4 runner. I have had 3 5th generation 4 runners and a 2010 FJ cruiser all ran full intervals time with me on 0w20. But these engines were extremely easy on oils.

The 2grFKS in our tacos has a few more obstacles than the 1gr. Direct injection for example has fuel dilution and direct injection soot that has been demonstrated to cause additional timing chain wear in some makes and models. Hyundai engines in particular have had failures and recommendations to increase viscosity. It doesn’t mean the Toyota engine will have problems but it is an effect to be aware of and the main reason I stick to the severe service interval. Direct injection soot timing chain wear is also being addressed in The most recent DEXOS spec. Which is good but the fact that they are reformulating oils for GF6 to address the issue demonstrates how widespread the problem is.
The GR engine block and internals were originally designed to be ran with ILSAC engine oils. This was when SL GF 3 was the certification required and all of them came in 30 weight. Many changes have occurred to this engine family but bearing clearance is still standard.

I don’t recall anyone stating that 0w20 caused sludge? It is not tested for deposit control at extreme high temperatures, so it may have a higher propensity to piston ring deposits which is different than sludge which is normally do to neglect, use of non detergent oil or bad coolant leaks.

In summary I don’t think it’s stupid to run the 0w20, (I will have 15 k. Miles using it in the 18 taco when it hits 25 k in. A month or two.)
I also know it would be prudent to run a 5w30 DEXOS approved synthetic oil when you can at 5 k mile intervals with any vehicle that has GDI that you plan on keeping well beyond warranty. I run my filters 10 k miles and my oil 5 k so the Intermediate oil change only needs a drain plug washer and is rather quick to perform without having to drop the filter.

As for the Devils advocate to my recommendations -Most everyone will be ok following the manufacturer recommendations because almost everyone drives in a certain way that was predicted by many studies on driving patterns, and trades their vehicles in ever 3-7 years and are on the consumer hamster wheel and will spend more years of their working life with auto loans than without. I know because I have done things that way to often in my life and learned my lessons. I plan on keeping what I have until It is more expensive to keep than purchase again.

Never took it to dealer for "free oil change". Now at 2.5 years old, from first oil change I used only Amsoil SS 5W-30.

M1 0w40 in both of my Tacoma’s as well as my 19 4Runner

10k oci and every one verified by UOAs.

    Guess what...I drive em hard
Engine will be much happier and longer lived on 30wt. I run 0w40 with a HTHS of 3.6 or there abouts. HTHS is something worth while to read about if your not familiar...it’s a much better baseline if the real viscosity of oil when under stress. It’s what separates the men from the boys

@Plain Jane Taco - I did find one brand (Mobil 1 I believe), But it specifically said "High Mileage". And I'm not going to use that in a brand new Rav4.

    I saw SuperTech

The current Camry debuted in June of '17. So 0w16 isn't particularly new

Walmart has it in both Mobil 1 and super tech in my neck of the woods. Both are quality oils

With two of the most popular cars in the world specing it...it will be readily available.

    Indeed.

And SuperTech is produced by Warren Distribution. Great product. Amazon Basics is basically the same oil....also produced by Warren

The manual states you can use 5W-20 but must be replaced with 0W-20 at he next oil change. Redline Oil runs a little thicker than almost all mainstream oil brands that I've seen. I use Redline 0W-20 which has an HTHS of 2.9 and Viscosity index of 172. Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy by comparison is only 2.7 HTHS and 173 Viscosity Index.

Redline 5W-20 is almost like a lighter weight 5W-30. It has an HTHS of 3.0 and and VI Index of 147. Mobil 1 Annual protection only has an HTHS of 2.6.

Redline 5W-30 is a thick and almost like a lighter 40W oil. HTHS 3.7 and 166 VI Index. Mobil 1 Truck&SUV by comparison is only 3.0 HTHS and 166 VI Index.
