I did this with a cottage we had in coastal MA a couple of years ago. My wife and realtor were skeptical but we sold it for $40K more that the original price the realtor came up with.

I’ve never heard of the barrier for that reason, we have that too but it’s not for salt it’s for keeping the road in place...

Yes use it pure. It does cost as much or more then roundup but I don’t use glyphosate, that shit is complete poison. Lots of talk about salt ruining your ground water and soil but not glyphosate?! It’s known to cause cancer and is by far the most damaging to your property, local wildlife and yourself. You’re free to use what you want but I’m done with that stuff.

I used it once and never again I agree it’s poison. I think salt doesn’t really go away, the poison is just for a season then the ground is okay again. Not defending it, but that’s the difference.

Obviously don’t want to spray it near a water source tho, that’s a great way to kill everything near the river and in it.

I’d use salt over glyphosate every time. Thing is, eventually EVERYTHING gets into your ground water. One of the small towns near by is having that issue. They are on bottled water due to the cow manure seeping into the city ground water.

 

I use winter.

 

Ummm... that only works for a few months to half the year.

I'm biologist (consultant currently, with prior regulatory agency experience) and I've been working in FL for over 20 yrs. I know weeds pretty well.

Dumping salt on the ground is horrible. For the love of all things holy, don't do it. Especially in FL. Doesnt matter if you have geo tech stabilizing barrier or not. It totally Fs up your land and groundwater. If you have a well, it will spike chloride in it. It will kill bacteria in septic tanks rendering them useless. Like the guy above said.... just mix roundup appropriately and spray it sparingly on a calm day. Or get some goats.....

 

The torch is probably the only biologically safe version.

Little disheartening all the support for roundup, especially considering the recent developments. I’m by no means an environmentalist but still not a fan of Monsanto and their products or strong arm tactics.

 

I'm not promoting roundup in any way. But God, we have people dumping bags of salt in their lawn.... so lesser of 2 evils. There are weeds in FL that you can't even burn away. Like cogan grass (Imperata cylindrica). I work on 1000+ acre habitat restoration sites. We'd never be able to get them back to natural state without roundup and garlon.

Sounds like salt is a problem there though, don’t think it’s something used very much here.

 

I use a drag, like you would for a baseball infield.

 

My visit last year to Montana actually got me thinking more about salt. I was out there in February and you guys used crushed gravel, no salt. I LOVED it. Snow tires and was good. Started looking up why we don't just do that in Mass. Ended up finding a powerpoint from DOT outlining all the different salts they use at different temps and how much etc...

It's gross how much my state pays a year in salt, just to destroy its environment, all while projecting loudly throughout the world about how grand and environmentally focused they are. Towns all around me going hundreds of thousands over their snow budgets in salt every year...

I'm not at all an environmentalist, but I live in and make a living off the woods so I have a vested interest in keeping them nice. I also drink from a well and am NOT interested in DOT throwing salt in my water table and destroying my ability to live and work here.


@shane100700 as far as promoting round up, I hate the stuff, but if you want something that works, and keeps stuff dead more than a week or two, that's really the only good option. Otherwise you do like my business does, and pays someone with an organic ceder based version that basically needs to be reapplied every couple weeks.

 

Yeah, I’ll admit roundup does work good, just more and more health concerns coming out everyday about it. When I was stationed in HI, I also learned some of the negative aspects of Monsanto GMOs. Their HQ is there so people tend to be very pro or anti, not a lot of in between like here on the mainland.

Maybe I am more conservative because I have two shallow wells (17’) here on my property.

About the salt; We even switched our water softener to potassium a few years ago. So much better, uses more but tastes and feels better.
