I have a 2003 Tacoma two door base model with manual lock doors. If the door is lock I cannot open the door from the inside .
If, an emergence is needed to get out of my truck right now! I would have to reach over my left shoulder pull the lock rod up to open the door. Volkswagen door will open if you pull the door handle twice . Just thinking of safety. Would be nice if it worked that way

Why do you have the doors locked when your inside the truck??

That is a safety feature to keep the kids and dog from opening the door going down the road

A lot of cars do that. On the newer ones, once their in drive the doors cannot be opened from the inside without unlocking first.

    You have choices..............

Don't lock when you are in the truck. Will open on first pull as you desire.

Open a VW door, see how they accomplish what you want, and fab up the Tacoma door the same.

Retro fit the power locks system from your year model so it will work as you wish.

Buy another truck that works like you wish.

Now that you mention it, my 2007 gmc and my 2016 taco are the only vehicles I’ve owned in which the locks DON’T disengage the interior handle.

My 2010 RC locks and unlocks just fine from the inside, but I can’t lock the driver’s door from the outside; Sometimes I can if I really force it.

That is just the way all old school vehicles with manual locks have always worked.

if you have been through some of the shady areas I have been in with many pedestrians its often best to have your doors locked to avoid a potential miscreant opening your door unexpectedly and/or worse!

i have power door locks and it still won't automatically open when locked and tugging the inside handle latch

do the new 3rd gens not do this?

I have aftermarket power locks. It’s design to lock the door once you press the brake pedal. I can manual unlock or turn off the ignition and door will unlock. In the news a 2019 Hyundai got fire. Driver got 3rd degree burns....in a panic mode....the first is thing on my mind is to open the door and get out. But, my truck door will not open unless I reach over my left shoulder to pull the door lock rod. Something to think about?

If that’s the case then why buckle your seatbelt... you might forget to unbuckle it in a panic situation.

As a kid who opened a car door while the vehicle was going down the highway, I think the safety features take all the fun away.
You could always fab up door handles like I have on my '40. Push the handle down to lock, pull up to unlock and open.

This is normal lol. If the door is locked you have to unlock it to open it (from inside). We're talking about 15+ year old vehicles here, not modern ones. It takes all of 2 seconds to pull the lock tab up and open the door. Can't imagine many emergencies that are likely to occur where that would mean life or death. Be realistic now.
