Ive been dealing with the exhaust on this truck since Ive gotten it. It was missing a rear cat [stolen] and the front cat is hollowed out.

I do have an exhaust leak at the flexible pipe where the rear cat should be , Would that be a cause? Im assuming since its allowing more oxygen in.

Im just going for the cheapest fix at the moment as a new cat is $400..

There is a factory recall on the cats for the 4cyl taco. Do you know if this truck ever had that done to it? Assuming this is a 4cyl prerunner...

Im not really sure. It is indeed a 4cyl prerunner. Let me see if i can find out.

Edit: this is for 2010+ models. Mine is a 2008. also from what i've read its more an extended warranty fix moreso a recall. doubt id be covered

The leak isn't helping but it is more likely that the cat has failed. P0420 only triggers when the rear o2 sensor is switching rapidly with the front sensor. Usually exhaust leaks cause bad readings, not p0420.

So you have a cat code and no cat, but you think its related to an exhaust leak?

I miss interpreted the hollowed cat, I thought you meant worn.

Look into O2 simulators. There's posts on here if you want a dirty cheap solution.

Underdog Racing has the answer "Sensor simulator". Will turn off CEL but is not ECO friendly. Smog testing depends on the state you live in.
