Why is Aluminum difficult? Heard you need a spool gun, or something.

Dont even bother if youre gonna spool gun it. I know @koditten has a differing opinion on them than I do, but I think theyre more trouble than theyre worth.

What's the whole point of the spool gun anyway? I thumbed through a welding textbook but never really looked into the fine details. I just know for welding Aluminum, you need a spool gun.

Truth be told, Im not sure. All I know is aluminum has to be clean af to weld, and is real finicky on how much heat or speed to use.

    Glad to be tagged. Thanx.

I don't remember ever cleaning aluminum I wanted to MIG weld. mig gets the job done, but it will never look as nice as TIG welding. I don't TIg weld, so I don't know if it requires better prep/,cleaning.

As for being "finicky", it's true to an extent. Once you get your settings right, the only thing you need to be conscious of is the fact that aluminum transfers heat very well. You will need to speed up your travel speed as you progress your weld. 3" welds or less, this is a non issue.

It’s different. The metals way easier to blow through. I can Weld it. Just not super good because it’s rare I need to. My father welds titanium, sanitary stainless and aluminum for a living these days. You also need a high freq capable welder

I invited @eon_blue to Los Padres when I went camping last week, but he's pretty far down south.

I was thinking of taking an extra day next week (since I have Wed and Thur off) so I can camp somewhere new...wouldn't mind driving at least 4-5 hours one way to camp overnight.

    What do you think?
