Want to upgrade my 2015 Tacoma non jbl system. Is it better to upgrade speakers first then head unit or head unit first? If I were to go with a head unit I want car play and I don’t care about dvd or even cd. If it comes with cd that’s ok. I don’t want to pay more for features I won’t really use. Thanks.

Replacing the factory stereo will make a bigger difference than replacing the speakers.

You'd be amazed at what a good head unit does to factory speakers.

It’s a good idea to fully plan this. Speakers, head, new wires and antennas make for a true upgrade.

Then you can piecemeal it to your budget. Either speakers or a head will make sound difference. If you get a head only it shouldn’t have to be limited by your current speakers if you eventually plan to upgrade them. Similarly your upgrade to speakers first shouldn’t restrict you head replacement later.

That all said, shitty speakers or those mismatched to the sub/tweeters can make a decent enough head sound crappy so contrary to the above posts I’d suggest you do a lot of investigation into what speakers you actually have installed before you buy anything.

The speakers are factory. I wasn’t going to too crazy. I saw some jl their yellow color on crutchfield 6x9 with tweeters for like 160.00 give or take and matching 6.5 for the rears for like 120.00 give or take. More than likely I won’t be adding a amp and a sub.

Cool. Sounds like you’ve thought it out. I trust Crutchfield, and my family has trusted them for decades. Work with them on your system. They should be able to balanced the impedances correctly.

Search TW on the Subaru tweeter mod. No experience here but I’ve seen a lot of threads. Sometimes fixing the weakest link gets you the best bang.

Sounds like a great mod...pun somewhat intended.

Thanks man. Yeah I’ve got to do a little more research on the tweeter mod since I’ve got a 15. I’ll give crutchfield a call.
