The 4.7 was used in a 4Runner at one point, right? I know the 4Runner and Tacoma aren't exactly the same, but they are in the same size class.

Yes, it allows for tight packaging. The belt driven fan is reaaaaaally close to the rad on those 4th gen 4runners and GX470s.

In all honesty, no, and if I can't do something then obviously I would look for advice or help from someone who can.

I'd second the statement someone made that your best move in this process would probably be to find a donor truck for all the pieces or at least the vast majority of them.

I'm curious, what did you mean about the replacing the engine anyway..did the engine not work on the vehicle already that you purchased? No criticism..

I would say for the same or less amount of money you could supercharge or turbocharge your 4 cylinder, with less electrical issues...and still gain a substantial amount of power.

The engine is fine in all honesty, but I bought a 4cyl as it would be cheaper to get me into a Tacoma, including insurance wise. I think I already mentioned it but my goal is to become a mechanic but also to be able to call the truck mine, rather than just buying something that someone's already done half the work of. I know it's going to be more expensive but that's more blood, sweat and tears into MY truck. Is it unreasonable? Probably, but I don't care about reason. What I want is to make my dream a reality, even if it takes more than a couple grand.

In the old days yes, a v8 swap into an S10 or Ranger was normal. But now with miles of wiring harness and expensive V6 aluminum motors its further out of reach.

I was considering the SC for more power until I just fucking annihilate this engine. The only problem is that a lot of the parts are built for a v6 engine, which everything sits differently as far as I can tell... I have to more research, but for now I want to learn as much as I can

Then if you don't mind the work and expense. I'dstill say buy a donor truck. That way you'll have all the components and little odds and ends that you'll need. Then sell what you don't use to recoup some of the cash.
It is a big project. It'll be frustrating, but rewarding at the same time.

It's only got 86k and it's a 2012. It's still got a lot of life in it and I intend to use it to it's fullest extent, so the whole swap deal is probably a year or two or even more down the road.

I would buy a complete doner running truck at least a 2008 or higher to avoid getting one with a bad head gasket and then swap EVERYTHING!!!! Wiring, air conditioning, power steering, transmission wiring, transmission computer, ecu, I can keep going. But your best bet is to buy a second truck.

If you plan to use it too it's full extent it will be a hundreds of thousands of miles till it's done (the 4 cylinder has the more reliable reputation).

Either way. If you decide to swap, shoot me a pm about the engine.

Drain the oil and coolant and have at it. You can be done in a day.

Even driving 30k a year, with Jiffy Lube quality maintenance, you've got 6-9 years, and possibly longer.

More than a couple grand? That *might* get you an under 150k stock v6 of unknown condition.

You mention wanting to learn. That's a great thing. One of the best places to start is with a making a reasonable plan. IMHO you're not there yet.

Best of luck to you, sincerely wishing you success in your ventures.

I'll see myself out now. :hattip:

Please SKTwenty, get this figured out. Surely there's a 1/2 way reasonable way this can be done. I really want a v-6 in my 2013 reg. cab. I hate the 4 cyl, but to get a 6 cyl. I must get an extended cab & I hate extended cab trucks. May be worth a phone call, some folks want to be helpful & others may get mad at you for asking. But there's a Co. in Prestonsburg KY. that's been rebuilding Tacomas for over 30 yrs., they should have some helpful imfo. "if" they would be willing to share it with you. That's all they do. Their email is WWW.TONYSAUTOANDPARTS.COM phone # 606-874-0449 or 606-791-0909. May be useless or could be helpful. Just a thought. & good luck, I'm on your side.

Gears are greater than power just saying.

But anyways I bestow some of my knowledge. I'll start with saying I believe the 2trfe although it has flaws paired with the r155f is one of the best combos Toyota has ever produced for the north american market. When I was looking at replacing my 4cyl because after many years of sending it the rings went. I looked at a V8 swap, although Americans get great deals on things it's a shit ton of fab work and wiring, actually any swap will be. I had planned to use the 3uz as I had located one semi locally. What stopped me was a sobering coat analysis. Since my truck is more wheeler than anything i don't need tons of power I'd rather run dual cases and keep a 4cyl. So for me it made sense to rebuild and supercharge later if I felt like it( I have forged internals) adapters for the r series trans are very common so that's easy. The hard part is if you can't weld getting the custom cross members done, custom driveline and all the wiring. The other engine I considered was the 2jz there is an abundance of them locally and it requires much less fab work to get the straight 6 in there imo. Still a fuck ton of wiring to do and no instructions. A 1gr swap would be the only bolt in swap but again you still need wire harness, ecu and if you're 5spd you'd need some sort of adapter as I'm not sure and never found out if the r series will bolt up the the 1gr, and I know nothing about autos

www.urdusa.com has a s/c kit for your engine.

There are a few members with your engine, in the turbo BS thread. With a fairly easy route to turbo boost. That is my recommendation of the two choices. It is slightly more complicated as you'd need to have the down-pipe and charge pipes fabricated.
