Thats a 2.7, 22R and 22RE all had adjustable rockers long before the 2.7.

 

He’s truck is a 2.7 though yes? Then it has buckets and shims.

There is no easy way to install an oil pressure gauge regretfully. The manual says you have to remove the oil pressure switch from the side of the block ( it's under the exhaust manifold IIRC) and install a pressure gauge. Its 3 or 4psi at idle and should be 36 to 71 psi at 3300 rpm.

The oil pump is a metal rotor that turns on the crankshaft and isn't really known to go bad.. you have to remove the crank pulley and oil pump cover beneath that (it has Phillip's screws attaching it to block and strip out easily) to get to the pump and then use feeler gauges to verify the rotor spacing is within tolerances of the housing

 

Yes bucket and shims ... I just got done with a full fresh rebuild, I'm more familiar with this engine than I should be lol


I would start with plugs and wires myself cause they'll pop like a valve tick under load if they're bad

 

Pretty sure that’s incorrect. I literally just researched the 2.7 valvetrain last week. Planned on checking my valves

 

Don’t mean to highjack the thread but how many miles where on your engine and how close where your valve clearances?

 

@96towcoma I rebuilt the engine at 226k cause the previous owner screwed up the head gasket job (idiot used permatex and plugged a couple of cooling passages) and the head cracked. I bought an aftermarket head from APRauto (based outta CO) and they preshimmed the valves. When I checked them all the exhaust valves were at 12 thousandths and the intakes were at 9

Toyota spec calls for .007 to .009 on the intake and .010 to .013 on the exhaust

I've had one other 3rz that I did a shim job on and it's tedious a crap. They call for a special tool to compress the valve buckets to add or remove shims but I ended up taking a flat bladed screwdriver and torching a 90 degree bend in it, worked much better for me

 

@96towcoma it's worth noting that the 3rz valve clearance will tighten up over time not loosen so if you're on the low end of the specs when you check, it's better to add shims in to open her up now than have issues with burnt valves later

 

Thanks that is helpful. I am starting to think I am not even going to bother checking them. I’ll just run her until she blows and if the chassis has any miles left in it I will build a motor for it.

 

@96towcoma are you referring to the 3rz that's in your 96? If so you've got a cast exhaust manifold and those are notorious for cracking and you can have other motor issues because of it. I bought a header from an 01 tacoma with the same motor and it bolts right up (except you can't refuse your stock heat shield)

 

If you plan on building a motor I recommend the same 3rz but going with a either a SC or Turbo. I've done all the "mild" upgrades to mine and the power differnece is so minimal I should've shelled out for a supercharger haha but we live and we learn

 

I didn’t actually mean build it. More like rebuild lol. The 3rz is the perfect 4 cylinder for a compact in my opinion. Does everything I need it too. If I think It needs more HP I just go drive my buddies 1994 2.3l ranger. After a short ride in that my truck is a rocket ship! If i was dead set on making more Power I’d throw an aluminum blocked ls or similar v8 in it. F the nonsense

 

Hahaha gotcha. I agree this 3rz is a bulletresistant little work horse and I love it.. word of warning, be careful with after market rebuild kits. I bought mine from Felpro and the gasket quality on half the gaskets was crap, 1 or 2 didn't fit at all, and ALL the orings in the kit were slightly wrong.. somethings it was okay on but others fucked my rebuild up! Like the orings for the fuel injector spacers (plastic buckets) I broke a bunch before buying OEM orings to match and they all just popped into place no issue

 

Aghhh that’s frustrating. Normally you can’t go wrong with fel pro.

Trucks actually a 97 but I CAN NOT figure out how to change that. I literally just spent 3 hours drilling broken bolts out of my manifold about a week ago. And now you tell me it’s a piece of shit! Lmao. Anyways I’m done with exhaust bolts for now. I hope I never have to take that manifold off because it isn’t going to be fun lol.
