What transmission would be better? And does that transmission bolt up to the 2trfe?

Pretty sure some foreign markets have that adapter. As they have a 5 speed bolted to the 1GR.

It still seems a donor ext. cab Taco w/ V6 of the same yr. model as mine should have all the parts needed for the swap, even tho getting things like computers & wiring hooked up may be the challenge. You'd think a donor would have the motor mounts, cross members. wiring harnesses, computers, transmission, most everything needed. May need a different length driveshaft, or something, but that stuff is minimal. Under the hoods of all Tacos are the same. Toyota doesn't make a different chassis, suspension, or engine bay for a Taco 6 cyl. vs Taco 4 cyl., Most all the parts should be a direct bolt in, except for the wiring, computers, etc. You'd think this shouldn't be that complicated.

The only thing I can add is to check your state laws in regards to engine swaps. Make sure it will be able to pass any state inspections. Some states are very strict on these kind of issues. You don't want to start this conversion and find out it can only be an off-highway vehicle that isn't legal on the streets.

That's actually the entire point of this thread: to find out everything that I need to know when doing a project like this. It hadn't even occured to me that it would need state inspection too... I've seen quite a few jeeps fail them and they're good looking jeeps

I think this is your best option and a very good suggestion... if you don't do the 4.0 swap.
You might be screwed if your state requires smog and they run the VIN number only to find your 4-cyl has become a V6 or V8... I'm guessing that would be an instant fail. Maybe your state doesn't require smog inspections.

What state are you in? That might help others here to know what can and can't be done to your truck.

You may install a different motor if it is of the same or newer model year in your truck. If your truck was made before 1976, you wouldn't have any worries with emissions controls. Does your state enforce CARB regulations?

From what I'm hearing, some states are looking at implementing the CARB system.
l can't remember which ones, but l remember hearing the story on the news a few months ago.

Middle Eastern and I think some South American countries. I used to know a guy with that exact combo.

Also in Marylandistan, although I can't say I'm 100% up on engine swap laws. Pretty sure they 'require' same model year or newer... but I know lots of peeps doing state inspections, and if it looked safe & factory, they wouldn't even know to care. And '12 can do the self-service emissions thing, as long as it doesn't set a CEL the only possible gotcha I could see there would be making sure the ECU VIN matches your VIN. I don't *think* it's sophisticated enough to see that your VIN says 4-banger, but the engine says 4.0L.

I'm also seriously perplexed by your statement that you bought a 4-banger knowing you'd swap it... but then seemingly asking about putting in the other engine you would've gotten had you not bought said 4-banger. Like... it makes sense if you're doing a diesel swap, or something else that wasn't available... but putting in the other option, just cuz, makes not a lick of sense to me. But hey, you do you.

+1 on buying a donormobile if you insist on doing it. You'll go ass-broke trying to source this and that little piece from junkyards, or Toyota. And when you're done, you'll have more into it than buying a truck with a V6, and if you're lucky, the same resale value as if you'd left it alone. Don't get me wrong, if you did it right and it looked factory & ran perfect, *I* would buy it, but I'm not most people, and I'd also want a serious deal on it.

With all the potential headaches and expense. Why not just buy an older truck that has a lot less electronic hurdles, and probably less emissions hurdles as well, and go from there. Use your present truck as a parts shopping rig. At least that way you can start working on your project a lot sooner and as you can buy parts. Plus you'll still get the satisfaction of doing the project yourself.
The final bill probably won't be that much different either.
