Been doing lots, moved to Thunder Bay, been focusing on life and personal issues. Haven’t had much time to be on here :( but went wheeling today and reminded me of how much I enjoyed Tacoma’s and talking to you guys so I thought I’d check back in

    Aluminum vs Steel skids

Since from what i heard from you guys, I know Ardbeg and Concession/ every other trail here in ON demand more skid plates over rock sliders.
and i personally have *no* idea about anything in regards of skids other than AL= lighter than steel but more $$

We also got a new Canadian vender buddy @ok_expedition,
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/canadian-made-skids.627529/page-2#post-21465293
also @sorgon82 has started to poke me with a stick since i asked like 2 questions. he wants to buy a set

inform me and my newbie brain

For your long truck, id get rock sliders first, stock skids will save you. But rocker damage is no good.

Are you going to build your truck up with 33s and tackle concessions etc? Then do steel skids and they’ll last a lifetime

I just look at eugene, had aluminum, bent alot, has steel, abused it and its fine.

Personally im building some, but I’m going steel frame and 3/16” aluminum skin, best of both worlds. Strength and protection and somewhat light

    I agree with Taylor,

My sliders have paid for themselves countless times, and I only have an access cab.

    Probably at work.
    Vehicle:

Steel if you plan on off roading
    Aluminum if your mall crawling

Steels much stronger and can be easily bent back and modified later. No special welding required

I personally wouldn't waste my time with aluminum especially for parts that are specifically for taking abuse.

i’ve got steel sliders, steel ifs, and aluminum transmission skid and no skid for transfer case. I find that’s enough for the trails we do. I felt comfortable doing Greens Mountain (4) with this setup.

@honkonbobo would think different, even on the dirt roads I call VMUTS he had his transfer case attacked by a stick and unplugged. Not sure if it broke anything, but he had a hard time getting it back together in the Tim Hortons parking lot he said.

Pretty good! Halfway through my field school and then I start regular classes, it’s going pretty smoothly, learning lots.

And yah actually I did a pipeline cut trail yesterday that was fun, got pretty tight in a few spots and there were lots of water crossings. I think I need a winch because I wanted to push further but there were lots of dangerous zones and anywhere off highway 17 between TB and Nipigon doesn’t have great service so I didn’t want to get stuck.

Also I might get my motorcycle license and get a dual sport enduro bike but that might wait til next year. Plenty of opportunity to get some use out of it up here though.

getting a stick to jam up perfectly in the perfectly wrong spot between the t-case and skid is probably just shit luck (or not:annoyed:) but either way i know i wouldn't run without a t-case skid anyway based on the marks on it. a t-case skid is also relatively cheap vs the potential damage.

i cracked my oil pan on previous truck with full set of steel skid plates, a small rock hit it in the wrong spot, little things like that can happen anytime.

Not having a skid makes it real easy for it to happen I would say.
