Rock sliders first, not only do they protect one of the most commonly damaged areas on the trails, they even pay for themselves mall crawling as they protect from most door dings. Look at Mobtown's design, they have the strongest/best rock slider design out there. But also a terrible lead time right now (4 months).

AL is nice for the weight and it does not show rust like steel does. BUT since it has a lower yield strength than steel will bend a lot more easily, so if they have not added a LOT more reinforcement (than even that Canadian supplier does) you'll be hammering them out after a major rock crawling session (maybe).

Steel skids will be a lot stronger 30-60% depending on design, if you crack or split one will be much easier to get repaired. Will affect your city gas mileage a little bit 1-2km.
You may want to paint over scratches after you go rock crawling. Only bad points about steel are; weight and corrosion.

Unlike a lot of the other third party suppliers out there Mobtown guys are active off-roaders, to their designs get "field tested" and design tweaked.
Look at their AL skids and see how much extra reinforcement they put in them. They tell you that the Al one will protect your truck but will take more damage than steel ones. Now compare those mobtown skids to others... You'll see a lot of other skids are just for show (even some of the steel designs out there).

Nice ride! I’m looking at a TW200 but not sure I can swing insurance till I do a safety course. And the courses are done for the year (already almost below freezing at night here).

    Maybe next year!

    oh no, not again

In regards of the sliders, it is my intention to get those first before October - As much as i want Mobtowns and wait the actual 4 or so months for them to arrive in the early Spring, i don't need them as i don't wheel as hard as @Norilsk does and it's overkill. The stuff i do at the moment doesn't demand some crazy balls to the wall sliders, just anti-door dingers down the Mazinaw trail

So i figured, get a local-made slider and if it breaks in half (either literally or figuratively) that means i use them enough that it warrants getting something nicer, if it doesn't break - then great! There are a few fun runs that i want to do in October that may require the use of sliders - so i might as well get something for now till i eventually need something better. Unless you wanna give me you Mobtowns :D

AL vs Steel in terms of strength is usually a one sided argument, with steel usually ahead in terms of yield strength for the thickness but it comes at the cost of weight. Corrosion is something i didn't take into consideration, but you could add onto it a sacrificial anode or an inhibitor to help it. In regards if i do crack it regardless if it's AL or steel, i'll be using JB weld and PL glue to keep shit down till i'm done the trail.

If i were to go over landing proper to Alaska or something, than the AL would be nicer as it is a weight saving option. less weight, further you go. it's something i'd consider as i have a rough plan to do the full east cost north to south, to west coast south up to BC and maybe Alaska and back to Ontario as a 25,000-30,000km round trip or so.

The Stock steel OR skid that i have has already taken 2-3 hits now, showing small dents and the "wing" on the one side had gotten to a point where it vibrated against something if i were to run on gravel roads, but was easy enough to bend back) so i was mostly wondering what people's opinions on the matter is.

but realistically i'd be better off with steels for parts i don't have covered; fuel, diff.
keep the stock OR plates for now till i punch a hole through em.

Why do you like the TW200? I'd probably recommend something like a Yamaha xt350 or a Suzuki DRZ400. They'll both get you a lot further out of town.
Check out the Ontario Dual Sport Club website at ODSC.on.ca . I co founded the club in 1998.

Don’t want anything more powerful than a 200 because insurance. Also not looking to spend a lot of money on the bike. Mostly just driving it to school, I’ll check those out tho. Hard to beat buying a brand new tw200 for less than 6k

You'll probably find the 200 way underpowered in a very short time. And with a limited range you wouldn't get too far out out town. If your budget is 6k you'll have some good choices. Sign up for a rider course to save on insurance.

    I got my m1/m2 5 yrs ago when i was 19.

First you probably wont get insurance without the rider course which gives you your M2

Second, insurance doesn’t really care about the bike that much, some go off driver experience/ previous history etc and its rated at 400cc bike and under. 650 and under etc etc.

Also i agree, for what you want to use it for. Get a drz400s its a dinosaur and will run forever and you can actually drive it at 100kmh and still have some passing power. Motorcycles are dangerous as fuck and a little 200, your like a sitting duck on the roads
