They are only hiking prices to keep people from buying more than they need... Yeah sure.
9-11, a convenience/gas station near here upped gas prices to $6, iirc. That place went out of business shortly, and is still vacant.

I always marvel at the invisible line that differentiates "price gouging" from capitalism. The economy is based on supply/demand, except when said demand is caused by something other than a market craze?

In what I posted, the demand had not even started. The price was jacked up within minutes of breaking news.

Kind of like how the pharmacy industry makes 1 pill that costs $.25 to make yet they sell it for $250 each?
We’ve been getting price gouged for years. I guess it only matters when certain people do it.

I get wanting folks to not be taken advantage of in a situation like this.

Anti-price-gouging laws also dissuade entrepreneurial folks from loading up their truck with water and generators (which otherwise would be sitting on the shelf) and driving a couple hundred miles into a disaster zone to sell them to those in need.

    Yep.

I remember as Florence was hitting SC last year I saw a bunch of generators just sitting on the shelf at a NE GA Home Depot store, same with stacks of bottled water.

With anti-gouging laws some guy with a truck and couple free days has zero incentive to move those supplies into the area where they're needed. End result is the supplies don't get to the people who really could have used them -- all because of a sense of it being unfair.

Wife arrested after trying to take jailed husband’s guns to police

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (Gray News) - Police in Bartow, Fla., arrested 35-year-old Joseph Irby on June 14 for domestic violence and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

His wife, 32-year-old Courtney Irby told investigators he had tried to run her over with a car.

On June 15, she was taken into custody after police in nearby Lakeland said she broke into his home and stole his guns with the intent to surrender them to authorities, The Lakeland Ledger reported.

“So are you telling me that you committed an armed burglary?” an officer asked.

“Yes, I am, but he wasn’t going to turn them in, so I am doing it,” she replied.

Courtney Irby also faces a charge for grand theft of a firearm.

The couple is in the process of getting a divorce. Mrs. Irby had applied for a temporary injunction against Mr. Irby.

Authorities contacted him while he was still locked up in the Polk County Jail and he instructed them to prosecute his wife.
