I would have preffered the 3.5vvt with a super charger option

Well I’ve got both a Toyota and a BMW and I’d buy one if I wanted to change it up. :notsure:

Y'all don't happen to own a Yaris do you? Several Toyotas over the past few years have been largely produced with Mazda or Kia with Toyota dust sprinkled on top.

But I'll agree, the BWM Supra was a letdown for a Toyota purist.

Edit: I'd have liked to have seen what Toyota could've made a new Supra into on their own.

The cost of developing a low volume niche product like the Supra is astronomical. Add in the fact that it isn't intended to sell in big numbers and all of a sudden the bean counters and share holders get nervous. Toyota lost money on every Supra they produced in the final 2 years of the last gen's production. Co-development between companies is much more cost effective.

The BRZ/FR-S/A86 is good example. Subaru and Toyota shared the development cost...though Toyota shouldered more than Subi. The bottom end the engine is all Subaru, as is some of the suspension. But the top end of the engine is all Toyota, as is the transmission and rear end....and most of the interior bits.

In some cases it's cheaper to let another company build a vehicle for you. Mazda's Mexico plant produces the Mazda 2 and the Toyota Yaris. They share virtually every mechanical component and much of the interior.

In exchange for battery technology, Toyota all but gave Tesla the old NUMMI plant to produce their vehicles in.

On the plus side of the Supra....can you buy a Z4 for $46k?

After seeing the new Supra in the flesh it left me with an overall impression of meh.

I can afford one, but at that price point there are a lot of cars that I'd choose over it, starting with the Mustang GT350.

After doing a LOT of research, I came to the conclusion that a German car is great to lease but not to own.

I had a Mercedes SLC for a rental and decided that I absolutely was going to buy one when I got home.

A bit of research on them and no thanks.

    So I thought "How about a Z4?"

    Even worse.

To scratch my retractable hardtop itch with a reliable version I ended up with a Japanese car.

I feel like it’s all just personal opinion when it come to sports cars. For me I couldn’t own a GT350 simply because of the interior. Now some people don’t like BMW interior but i actually do so it’s just what your willing to compromise with at the end of the day

    Ugh.
So the reviewer doesn't acknowledge that some people have legitimate concerns.

Like BMW's notorious use of cheapish plastic and rubber...
Reliability. As in poor reliability compared to actual Toyotas.
Cost to repair, and it's gonna need it, frequently, if you keep it any length of time.
The engineers at BMW don't seem to ever take servicing into consideration.
Try to replace/service a part and you gotta remove lots of other things first.
Overpriced parts, and that's grossly understating things.
Often, you gotta buy a whole assembly instead of a single part.

Used BMWs out of warranty go for cheap. There's a reason for that.

So, the reviewer says it's "just fine".
Let him put his own money where his mouth is.
    Just fine, huh?
    No way.

Oh, and the asshole just had to get in a dig at West Virginia.
    Fuck off.

I understand your disappointment... but keep in mind there are plenty of excellent engines out there other than the 22re. Most manufacturers who see a bulletproof engine from someone else, help their own and the main company by contracting to use that engine and then they tweak it slightly.

The 1.8 in a 2016 corolla I had is the same as a lotus 4cyl race car, but obviously turbo and overbites etc for lotus. The 4.0 Jeep used was an amc engine, and amc never built a great all around vehicle - but they had one of the most iconic engines in online 6 history.

Mazda and ford shared a 2.4L i4 for many years...

Case in point I wouldn’t hate on them IF the bmw engine is a known performer. Toyota doesn’t have a big lineup of high performance engines, I think it was smart to pick a stable engine for their 2020 release.

I just read an article about the Supra in a Hagerty publication. Toyota merged with BMW on this because the Supra is a inline 6 and BMW builds some of the best inline 6 performance cars out there. Transmissions were the reason. I think Toyota didn't have anything up to pare. Heard the Supra is Toyota designed body on a BMW chassis and drive line. It still scoots. Will it live up to its reputation only time will tell. I'm 60 and love the Supra after seeing Paul Walker driving one in the 1st Fast and Furious movie.

Mazda RandD has a straight 6 almost ready to put in there vehicles, Toyota is also partnering with Mazda on it. Expect a new straight 6 in the next few years, probably across all platforms like the 3.5L is now.

I think this is another reason so many people are disappointed, we were expecting Toyota to actually make a supercar like the Supra, but we get a BMW with a Toyota badge.
