Sounds good, thanks guys. I assumed it wasn't possible but I was hoping to make it easy! I rattle canned the FJ sliders several years ago but my painting skills are somewhat pathetic and there is quite a bit of flaking. The Taco sliders were already painted when I bought them used last year, but they need to be completely redone.

I got my sliders powdercoated at ProCoat in Vancouver. They do a great job and even rushed my sliders through so I could get them back before the weekend. I figured I’ll touch up the powdercoat with paint when needed. Powdercoat will stand up a bit better than paint to wear and tear.

 

Thanks! I'm pretty sure that I'm going the paint route, but I'll give them a call for a quote. Any chance you remember how much they charged?

Also, I'm assuming the powder coating doesn't extend to the bolt-on areas which attach to the frame? If I'm correct, that means that it's bare steel against steel? Did you use any type of rust inhibitor between the parts? I keep reading recommendations for applying "fluid film" on the frame areas & the sliders.

Yes, the whole slider, mounting points and all get powedercoated. While we do get frame rust here in the PNW, it's nothing like the salt belt. I may get corrected, but most people in these parts don't do fluid film or any other undercoatings, and we stay fairly rust free.

 

I use fluid film if I'm going to be on the beach or the dunes along the coast in Oregon. That's the only time I've ever used it though!

 

If you liberally smear Astroglide on the underside of the sliders before every trail run, you'll have no scrapes afterwards no matter how hard you use them....

I’m going to use rustolem bed liner. Anyone know where I can get black self-etching primer?

Specifically, I'd recommend Raptor brand. For the primer and the liner.

Full disclosure: I've never used Raptor products, but I've seen nothing except exceptional reviews.

 

Crap that stuff is expensive.

 

My powder coated sliders on my second gen have held up great.
On my 3rd gen I painted them with the rustolem bed liner in a can. Stuff looks good but has not held up at all. I've painted a couple things with it and it chips very easy. With that said, I ended up re doing my bumper and sliders and used the POR15 bed liner and bushed it on. I give that stuff an A++ rating.
