REALLY low idle, how to adjust???

Okay, I came up to stoplight this morning on the way to school and after i came to a complete stop, my truck's RPMs dive, to around 580s- 640s (scangauge). I am wondering if there is a way to fix this, other than keeping my revs up, the "normal for tacoma's with the 3.4L is around 750, right? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

 

if its not coughing or stalling theres no reason to adjust it

 

I remember in my '93 there was a screw that adjusted the idle up or down. Not sure if it's present in the tacoma, but I was able to go from 500 to 1000 rpms and back.

However, I do suspect your problem is deeper than an idle adjust. Could be PCV valve? Bad plugs? Gummed up throttle body?

CRAP!, my internet froze and i didn't look to see if it posted or not, sorry.
The PVC valve should be fine, i BELIEVE that we replaced it when replaced the engine, could be wrong. Where would i look for the idle adjustment screw-thingy, haha. Just to check, thanks for the help. Any other ideas/ possible solutions are always welcome. Again, sorry about the other thread.

 

I've heard Sea Foam can help smooth out idle... Mine sometimes dips for no apparent reason too, to the point of "shuddering" like right before you kill it from not enough juice on a start. I just actually came in from adding sea foam to the crank case and will be inducing through the vac line later this week. I'll let you know if the idle shudder goes away, although it doesn't do it consistently now.

what all accessories do you have on if any when your idle is dropping? (A/C, amp, sub whatnot)

 

Those numbers seemm normal for an auto that is in gear. Mine is about 600 sitting at the light, in gear, foot on the brake. If I put it in neutral the rpms go up to 750.

 

Mine is 750 at all times at idle...never wavers unless a/c is on then 900

 

Mine is about the same. 500-600. As long as its smooth, you shouldnt have to worry.

 

Okay, so i heard a weird noise from the launch from a stoplight (was taking it easy) and as soon as it got to about 2k, clunk, clunk, clunk, really fast, so when i got to school and put it in park, popped the hood, everything seemed fine, but i was nervous all day, took it home, took my dad for a ride, to let him hear it, and he shook his head in anger and frustration, and said two words " bent rods". He took it to the shop the next day and the mechanic said the same thing. SOOOOoooooo, back to square one, luckily, the engine was still under warrenty, we are hoping that they will honor it, they should, but we are going to let a shop take care of it this time around. There are days that i really have to think, " i loved driving this truck", when it ran good for the first two days, then it was all down hill. I still think that I am coming out ahead, but, it's really hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

i don't think seafoam will unbend things, but it was on sale the other day at Northern for around 6.XX. Anyways, we got in touch with the company and they said that we could either take it out and and send it back and pay 300 (I believe some of that is shipping) and that they would replace anything that was messed/bent/broken in the engine and send it back to us, or that we could have a shop take it out, send the shop the parts and have them install anything broken or messed up, we'll do it ourselves and send 300. thanks for all the help.

 

Your are fuel injected no need to adjust.

If idle is out of spec then something is wrong.

 

I was having the same problem and fixed it by replacing my brake booster. I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma v6 3.4L 4x4.

 

I had most of the normal maintenance done to correct my low idle problem. Thinking back though, I remember finding a rubber piece on the floor near the gas pedal. I just looked around but could find nothing wrong. I started hearing a slight click when I let off of the gas pedal. One day I got under the dash with a flashlight and saw a small hole behind the gas pedal return arm. I reasoned that if this rubber bump-stop was missing, the gas pedal might be going too far and lowering the RPMs to the point of stall/dying. I know the AIC can also be the culprit but the rubber-stop needed to be replaced anyway.
I bought new rubber pieces that I thought I could never find. As it turns out they can be purchased for about $5 for a bag of 5.
I unscrewed 2 screws at the gas pedal spring, and moved the accelerator apparatus off to one side.
I opted for the same size rubber and after some grease and small cuttings, at opposite sides, the nipple finally went in to the hole and now it works as expected.

Our trucks have no idle adjustment. Your gas peddle will not lower your idle. Your idle is not adjusted by holding the throttle blade open. The throttle blade should be closed at idle. Having Slack in your throttle cable does nothing. The IAC controls idle, if you have an issue you should clean it.
