Just picked up a Gen. 1 Tacoma and have a question about "2 wheel drive low range".
The truck is a 2.7 5-speed with manual xfer case and manual locking hubs. Just wondering if I can put the truck in Low range with OUT locking the front hubs and have "2WD Low" ? Will this cause any damage (short term or long term). Had an old CJ5 and used to do this trick at the boat launch. Was told it wouldn't hurt the Jeep IF the front hubs weren't locked.

I know a guy that was doing a 2wd to 4x4 conversion on his truck, for a long time he only had the transfer case installed but not the rest and it allowed him to use low range even though he was only 2wd. He used it like that on the trails for a long time before finishing his 4x4 swap, never hurt anything as far as I'm aware.

Someone else should know better than me though

Yea, It never hurt the ole Jeep doing this "trick" but others had said it could bind up the diff if the front was locked so I just used low range without locking the hubs. Thanks for the help.

Yeah see the guy I knew didn't have his manual hubs or front diff installed yet, so that's the part I'm unsure of. Your Jeep I assume was a solid front axle and the Tacoma is IFS, not sure if that would make a difference or not but hopefully someone else can confirm for you.
