    Alright, potentially dumb question incoming.

I’ve only been driving my Tacoma (2012 TRD OR DCSB, 4.0) for a few months and every time I go to fill up I see the “no E-15 - E85” label on the gas cap. In every vehicle I’ve ever driven I usually fill up with 85 octane (in colorado) but I’m confused because there’s the separate pump for E85 right next to it. Is this label on the gas cap referring to E85 (“flex fuel”) or 85 octane? Is it okay to run 85 octane in my Tacoma? I tried searching TW for my issue but had no luck.

    Thank you in advance

E85 is methanol as is E15. Do not put that in there your engine will not be happy. The gas your putting in is 85 octane unleaded gas.

The 85 and 15 note how much ethanol is in the gas.

The EXX number is the percentage of ethanol. E85 is 85% ethanol. Your truck will be mad at you if you put it in there. :bananadead:

At higher elevations 85 octane replaces 87. I've only seen it in the Rocky mt states.

I haven't looked at an octane sticker on a pump in years. Now that I think about it, 85 octane gas is some pretty piss poor gas. Apparently it's a thing in high mountain areas. I guess it makes sense that it would work there. High elevation, less barometric pressure, equals less compression in the cylinder resulting in a lower octane requirement. Seems like it would be a problem if you fill up in the mountains and then drive to the valley.
