I just bought a 2017 SR5 2wd and was wanting to do minimal off-roading (I.E. occasional mud, I drive for work but would use to hunt/fish) and was wondering what the best mods on a budget ?

Tires, tires and better tires. 2wds hate mud btw.... get some traction boards and a winch... one that can be mounted in the tow hitch. Have a tow hitch put on the front so you can move the winch from front to back if needed.

Recovery gear, and then tires and locker.

As far as recovery gear goes, for 2wd, you should'nt be getting THAT stuck, a good recovery point front and rear, a tree strap, a static recovery strap, and a comealong should be adequate.

I second tires. Then just go play around and you will eventually get an idea for what you need. Traction boards and some recovery gear is always a good idea too.

Definitely tires! And since you are in the “I.E.”, winching in the desert or mountains? Winching in the desert by your self will require anchors like a “deadman” or Pul-Pal. In the mountains please use an”tree-saver” to keep from harming them. Tree savers also protect your line when anchoring on rocks.

I say tires first, nothing like getting a blowout or two flats on the same trip with the OEM tires!

I have seen a well placed shovel and a tow strap be used as a anchor point.

Thanks! Will a locker make a huge difference? Also without going into deep off roaring (I live in Florida so maybe just wetter areas at times) what is my best bet? The tires or locker first? Keep in mind I’m running stock OEM tires

Bang for your buck, tires. You have to be able to get the traction to the ground.

Tires first and a few recovery items. (Do not buy a hi lift in that assortment though.)

The auto lsd works better than most think, but it isn't a locker. Be sure to engage the lsd before your get stuck, not after. Momentum is your friend but also your enemy if going to fast.

Agreed. Unless you have jacking points and experience, hi lifts are marginal at best. Your better off with a lightweight floor jack and a pile of 2x4s. Traction boards are pretty epic too.

Would you recommend a 2 inch level kit and throw 33s on it? Or keep stock height for now on 32s?

33's are going to cause other issues unless you are willing make the mods to accommodate them
(285s). Cab mount chop, hammer pinch welds and new rims
255/85/16 is your only choice on 33's I think, but with stock rims, you may need a wheel spacer to keep the tire from rubbing the ucas.

I run 32 on stock height and with my lift. In my opinion they’re the best option unless your doing more serious off-roading or really need to have that “Bro” look.
