Headed to Bodie next week with a friend from Reno, he said the Masonic Road was rough 40 years ago. How is it for my Taco and his full size Chevy 4x2 pu now? He plans on leaving his trailer at home this trip. Down there a couple days, I may hit the Hoover Wilderness for a couple nights of bping with Repo after.

if you dont try to climb the hill in the middle its 2wd the whole thing.

cant see it being much of a challenge if you stay on the fire road, if you go hunting for things it can get interesting

Thank you. I think we'll spend two nights by Masonic area, drive over to Bodie after the first night, then explore or whatever. We collect campstoves and lanterns, so will talk shop a little.

2wd is fine as said in the post above, it’s a nice drive. Went 4th of July 823DE91D-5759-4F87-ABCD-8956AB6D7A9A.jpg

Check out Buckeye hot springs it’s right out side Bridgeport. There’s some primitive camping next to the hot springs. I actually had my bachelor party there last weekend ahahh

I also stayed at Buckeye Campground with my family June 23rd. Nice campground, and I think like $16/night. And the hot springs are a close drive/walk. They are on the opposite side of Bridgeport from Bodie, but it’s not far. The sites in the pay area had toilets nearby, and fire rings and such.
I also echo the comments about the drive north around to Bodie as being good for 2wd. There was one area where I had to use 4WD, but that was due to a road still having too much snow, and I assume that the snow has melted by now in the past 10 weeks.
My only caveat is that I didn’t drive all the way to Masonic site, but only on the road that leads to the spur. So, I went north around to Bodie, but didn’t take the extra spur out to the Masonic site.

Thank you. A third friend is going to be in the area found out today, so will still plan for Masonic area. Been 40 years since I was in Bodie, coming from Hawthorne over Lucky Boy.

This was about 8 years ago...

High axle clearance my ass. Nothing renters insurance can’t fix.

I seriously need to revive our rental car rally’s.

    A Mustang out there?
I switched my 33,000 mile tires back on after my Idaho, Oregon, Washington trip to finish them off, mostly hoping for no flats.

Realized the next morning after camping for the night with just one friend and a drive using the place mat map another friend got at the Jolly Kone in Bridgeport, that we went down the correct side road to camp in the Aspens, but it lead us astray the next morning. Road was opposite the monument for Masonic which we saw after a hunt let us see some country to the northeast and over the ridge from camp. Nice ride over backroads to Bodie.
Went backpacking with Repo for two nights in the Hoover Wilderness after the two nights by Masonic.

Few more pics. Softopper sure sucks in the dust, only thing I don't like. Maybe if it has the windows in and closed up, it may be ok. Screens were in place, front and back, left side and rear panel rolled up. Even with the two sides down, back rolled up, still gets dust in the bed.

My bad, keep forgetting to mention the county had a grader back in there. Helping some, messing up some. Ruts filled in now that summer is about over, moving some rocks onto the road. Very surprised though at how little dust flies up. Up north here, you'd be raising a big cloud of dust even driving slow with the powder that deep. A car could make it on the main roads, being careful in some areas of course.
