2019 tacoma w/3700 miles. what annoys me is, it wants to be in high gear all the time. in slow moving traffic it puts me in 6th gear at 25 mph, i give it some gas and it down shifts into a lower gear for a couple of seconds and then back into 6th gear again. i can't that "S" mode is that much better and "ECT" almost puts it into tundra gas mileage. another thing is, if i'm on a incline with the nose pointing uphill and go from reverse to drive it grinds if it drifts back inches. when i take it in for it's scheduled maintenance i'll mention me concerns and maybe they could check the fluid level or something that would correct this.....why couldn't toyota put in a normal transmission, tundras don't have a problem.

Welcome to TW... this forum is full of 3rd generation comments/issues/solutions regarding the automatic transmission system (physical, electronic, and programming). Do a little searching for complete details.

My opinion, the A/T in the 3rd gen is a total POS system... I just accept it as is.

p.s., it’s not Friday, but this topic could easily turn into a :bananadead:

Mine seems to like 4th gear at 25mph. I still get 20mpg using ECT, but that depends on your driving/route. Sounds like OVtune is your remedy.

The "grinding" noise the truck makes while rolling back, is probably the ABS.
    Mine does that too.

The transmission is “normal”. The shift points are tuned for fuel economy, which you may not like. That is not a function of the Aisin transmission, just programming choices by Toyota.

The grinding noise is a feature Toyota has that prevents the truck from rolling back on a hill, by actuating the ABS. I like the feature, especially Offroad as it prevents the classic “oh shit I’m rolling backwards” followed by a huge panic burn-out.

Its normal issue. I test drove an automatic first and thought the same, so i test drove another just to see and it felt the same way. This pushed me to get a manual and still enjoying it a lot.

How can they tell the truck is tuned if you don't tell them?

ECT does not effect the gas mileage that much. i have the ECT on at start up mod. run in ECT mode 100% of the time. i had the same thoughts that you posted and ECT saved the day for me.

Part of the reason along with others that I enjoy my Tacoma having a manual transmission, but to each their own.

They can as soon as they check for updates and see the stock ECU programming is absent.
