OVTune turbocharger discussion: plug and play or plug and pay?

Ok so I am having to seriously talk myself down from buying the upcoming OV Tuning turbo charger. I want some input from you guys who know more about mechanics and tolerances than I do.

My main question is should I expect to be able just install the TC and suddenly have +100 HP and a smooth driving truck? Or is there a slew of other parts that need to be upgraded to get everything out of the TC? Of so, what parts would be needed?

Edit: To clarify (for some reason) I understand the kit hasn't released, so I am definitely not asking for feedback or reviews of the OV Tune TC. I am looking for people who have changed modern vehicles from NA to FA to share their experience with components that might need upgrading.

 

Kit includes everything you need. Read the OVtune turbo thread. Search for posts from Ovtune.
Edit : Kit will NOT include tuning because many people are already tuned and only require new files so you will need to purchase the tune as well if you haven't already.

Unless your in california than you're out of luck.

 

No no, I get that everything you need to get it on is in the kit. My question is will my stock engine components like fuel injectors be able to cope with the increased engine load.

 

how can anyone answer your question? nobody has it installed in the field yet.

recommend you wait for actual feedback and actually get an answer. we all want to know the reality. the plans are written all over TW. he will have a stockish package with stock injectors. how that runs is yet to be answered by any of us.

 

With the 4.0 it was common to upgrade fuel injectors and fuel pump to maximize performance but not required.

 

Right, I'm not asking for feedback about this particular TC setup. I am looking for people who have gone from NA to FA on other modern vehicles who might have some insight on upgrades they have had to make. Someone like that is probably pretty capable of giving some input.

 

lots of yappin that will tell you nothing or what you already think you know. wait for real answers. this motor is a bit different so cannot compare to other install packages reliably.

Thank you sir. That's the kind of info I am looking for. I was expecting injectors needing some tweaking, but hadn't thought about the pump.

 

I'm waiting on an oil change, so I am looking for some discussion. Sometimes yapping generates quality information.

Mat has explained that the previous generation of the 2GR-FKS motor was able to handle over 500 horsepower on stock everything. The current generation of this motor (in the 3rd generation Tacoma) has features the old design did not have such as a forged crankshaft and forged pistons. You shouldn’t worry about anything breaking especially since Mat abuses his test vehicle far worse than you will abuse your vehicle

 

Actually, the TRD S/C kit came 455cc inj. The stock were ~350cc I believe. Fuel pump was near or at max operation with stock 3.0" pulley. Pump upgrade is required for any increase in boost. Although some may argue that point... I have experienced enhanced drive ability when I upgraded mine.

The OV stage 2 and 3 kits will come with upgraded 500 cc injectors but according to Mat there should be no need to upgrade the fuel pump since there are 2 fuel pumps and 12 injectors on the 3rd gen trucks. The 2nd gen trucks needed an upgraded fuel pump since there was only one per truck.

 

3rd gens run on direct injection, the port is just supplementary. And if you had to upgrade the DI injectors you'd be looking at big big big money.

Biggest thing that used to kill the supercharged models was poor fuel quality. I imagine the new gen of induction will be the same thing. If you don't log knock and fuel trims you will have a huge failure eventually.

I 100% discourage anyone from being the first. I've seen the headaches on all sorts of vehicles and its best to let the aftermarket sort it out first.

 

The pump is adequate up to the high end tested at 10+ psi so far. I understand that another company developing superchargers said they hit a fuel limit but that is software limited not hardware. Taken into account already by Ovtune.

Again, if injectors are required for the install, OVtune will likely provide them in the kit. I think it was mentioned that the lower HP kits the injectors were adequate.

 

The whole idea with his twin turbo/supercharger kits was that it was all bolt on and pre-tuned. You shouldn't need to do anything hardware wise after purchasing it.

 

This kit will wear the engine out quicker so yeah your gonna pay as it costs money to go fast...it will be some time before it’s available to purchase as a couple of full throttle pulls on a dyno only accounts for 5% of the time on how you would drive on the street. I would be more interested in the other 95%.
