What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Build-up? Like is there any thickness to it or just coloration? pic?

 

no pic yet, just looks like dried coolant is all
going to try a razor blade gently scrape it

$280 for this minor repair (what the dealer wanted lol)
i haven't pulled a radiator hose in 1/4 century at least

 

knock it off with a scotchbrite if it is where the hose seals, if its in the pipe leave it alone unless you want to pick at it forever

 

nothing was in the pipe as far as i could tell
it took a razor is all on the outside with very fine scraping all the way around to get to the metal
plugged the pipe with a rag so no dust gets in there, don't think the cooling system has a filter for these contaminants
this must be a dozen years of dried coolant trying to escape (its been over 12yrs since this hosed was last removed as far as i know for the TB)

... over a 2 hour job now, had to let engine cool down from getting off the road
guess the mechanics quote was spot on!
assuming they were going to get this crust cleaned off and not just slap a new hose over the top of it

 

They would have knocked it off with a scotchbrite or a wire wheel and shipped it. The cooling system has no filter, and frankly as long as the coolant isn't older than 3-4 years it doesnt need one

Ah-aaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

 

I finished putting the struts back together. I used the stock front coils with the 4 position Bilsteins set on the 3rd position. Before I was running the Monroe Quick struts and Cooper 245/75/R16 tires. Now I have the SCS F5s and Pirelli Scorpions 265/75/R16 tires. I gained 3" up front and about 1 1/4" in the rear. Its somewhat taller than I had planned,but I think it looks great. I had the wife try out the passenger seat and she did good as we are the senior type folks. What do you think? Frank

Have you checked the tension bolt? Mine was squealing on startup, I checked the belt tension and it was loose. Tried to tighten it up and found the bolt was snapped. I think I just put in a long bolt from Home Depot? Been awhile so can't remember all the details of how it was broken, but still holding some tension.

 

had to use some wd40 to lube that up, the new hose was not going on as easy as that old one was in coming off, and the lube helped it slide on easier but still a very TIGHT fit

that dried up gunk may be older than I think it is, assuming the tech that pulled it off last time never cleaned it up, which is a very real possibility from many prior experiences lately.

so i possibly had 22+ years of dried coolant, dirt probably also, and associated gunk that led to this hose failure

since i did this work by myself (taking approximately 3 hours in all) what kind of guarantee do i have that the work was done properly and something won't go disastrously wrong while very far out of town next week with an overheated and blown engine!?

 

Since there's more traffic here. Who replaced their intake tube with the metal pipe?? Thanks for the help.

Also I replaced my sunvisor. So happy to have one that stays up.

 

Just the noise.. I’m sure there’s some kind of change in response. But I didn’t really notice anything putting my freebie airaid tube on.

 

You need to rub a hole in it to really notice the difference

Really just to goof off. I know it doesn't do anything. I got a TB spacer and I wanted to make a shorter tube. It's for my kids 4runner. We like the sound so why not have some fun with it. I was more curious if the pipe was straight or if it had a curve to it.

 

Is there a paper gasket for the 3rd member to housing or should I just use permatex? Which is better?

 

No I was brought up in Bridgeport Ct.

 

Just monitor it over during the week to see there is no seepage. I'm sure you did a better job than what most shops would do in giving it 15 minutes of time.

I could show you some shop work where the old RTV was not scraped or cleaned off of parts that use it for a seal. Basically it was just smeared over the old stuff and put back together. The owner never about the quality of work. I saw the receipt where the owner paid around $1,200 for that job back in 1998.

Oh yea, and back in April I paid a shop to pull my oil pan and check the rod bearings. I never found any evidence they removed the oil pump supply tube or the windage tray to get at the rod bearings. Then when they attempted to reinstall the oil pan, the got some huge amount of RTV on the windage tray while trying to remount the oil pan. It was just a mess.

Then to top it off, they stripped a couple of the bolts that hold the coils on the passenger side valve cover. Finally, they forgot to install the retaining bracket for the passenger side full moon. I have no idea whey they removed it. I doubt they have either. So a couple of weeks later the full moon seal popped out. That started a massive oil leak. It would leak 1 quart of oil every 10 miles.

So I know its easy to doubt your own work, but I've seen some sloppy stuff that would make your skin crawl that cost a bunch of money.
