I would say it's "technically" illegal. Pretty black and white in 97.113 (b)

    (b) An amateur station shall not engage in any form of broadcasting, nor may an amateur station transmit one-way communications except as specifically provided in these rules; nor shall an amateur station engage in any activity related to program production or news gathering for broadcasting purposes, except that communications directly related to the immediate safety of human life or the protection of property may be provided by amateur stations to broadcasters for dissemination to the public where no other means of communication is reasonably available before or at the time of the event.

All he has to do is end his call out with "Monitoring" or "Listening" and hes fine. "Kxxxx safe and sound headed home, monitoring" is a legal transmission.

Edit: I rescind my "technically not illegal" because you are right by the book its illegal. Its "Gray area legal", meaning depending on you go about it no one is going to report you unless you are being annoying with it. "Just left the gas station Im still alive" "Just passed the church on 53st im still alive"

no internal tuner is a deal-breaker. I'd get a kx3 with the optional tuner if you're looking for a portable HF radio

Interested in opinions. Have a new truck, "need" a new radio. I have an old Motorola maxtrac we hacked in my 2000 tundra for 2M. Only holds 12 freqs though, and they have to be preprogrammed. Was fun to play around with but it's not what I really need.

Also re-purposed a couple Motorola CM300 for our own little net at work between my two shops, but it's only 2M as well. Only things we have for 70cm are handhelds. Would love to move to a dual band. Major thing I need is Airband though. I run an Avionics/Radio repair shop so testing/listening on airband (yes I know no HAM radios xmit on AM airband) is very desirable.

My handheld Kenwood THf6 was modifiable for MARS/Cap and airband RX. I have my fair share of AM handhelds too... just looking for something all-in-one.

    Thanks in advance, Gents.

Yeasu 8900 is dual band, dual monitor, and can Rx airband as well. Mine with the MARSCAP mod is pretty sweet. The Kenwood is a good one too, I just went Yaesu to fit in the pen slot of my 2nd gen.

Hey, I never thought of it. I have a 7800 collecting dust here in the shop. We used to use it as a shop radio until we went trunked. I'll look into the MC mod for that radio to see if it applies. Thanks!

It does. There's a really good video on youtube on how to do it yourself. I used to have the 7900 in the same spot.

Nope, not the pen slot. But the 7900 will take the MC mod is what I meant.

The Lighting, radio, and APRS command center when all tidied up does look pretty great:
