1st Oil change, free but $38 more to change to Syn oil!! Is it worth it??

why are you changing synthetic that often??? unless maybe i'm reading it wrong....synth will last a full 5k and more

 

I believe we have timing chains. Check again on that auto tranny fluid change interval...I think toyota changed it from 100,000 to 60,000.

 

You read correctly.

I like to change the oil in a new vehicle after 500 miles and before 1000 miles (I got busy and had to wait until 1297 miles to be exact).

I will change again at 3k and 5k...then every 3K +/- after that.

In my view...you can not change mechanical fluids enough...syn or dino.

My new 2011 4cyl uses 0w20; it says so in the manual and also on the oil cap - and when I bought 2 quarts to have on hand - that weight is ONLY available as a synthetic oil. Kragen has it in Mobile 1, Dealership has a "

That's interesting.. My recently purchased 2010 4cyl has 5w-20 on the cap, manual says I can use that or 0w-20, but had a Toyota service writer recommend 0w-20 over the phone when I called to ask some questions recently. He also told me mine came with a synthetic blend from the factory and that the changes they do there are mobil1 for my truck from the first one.

I'm sure what they have at the shop there comes in a big barrel, but I too have seen their "Toyota Full Synthetic Oil" advertising in the dealership showing it in quarts you can buy and I'm pretty sure it's just relabeled mobil1.

 

I went in for my 5000 mile oil change and service and requested synthetic. They told me it would be $48 dollars for synthetic. I laughed, went to Wally World and bought some Mobile 1 and dropped it off for them to put in. $48 dollars for fucking oil? Geez. From now on I will let them change it but I'll buy the oil I want and have them put it in. They only reason I have them do it is because it's "free" and it's right down the street from work so I can drop it off, walk to work and pick it up at lunch and my Saturday morning can be better spent playing golf.

 

I would say to do it yourself, it's not hard at all and good therapy if your anything like me. I think the debate of syn or not to syn has been beat to death. If you use a name brand (not the cheapest crap you can find) then you should be ok. I used mineral oil for ever before I made the switch. AND the switch was made considering the engine I was using. I did not want to start syn in an engine with 200,000 miles and has been run using dino juice. This may cause oil particulate to break free inside the engine and cause alot of trouble. I use synthetic in my Tacoma, and I also used it in my 07 Jeep. The newer engines can benefit alot from these newer highly refined oils, but I don't bite on the "you can run this oil for 25,000 miles" crap either, you are not changing the amount of dirt and crap in the oil all you have done is swapped the oil for one that has been designed from the ground up to perform the tasks engine oil needs to perform. My simple answer is go with synthetic and change it at least every 5,000 miles. JOE>

 

It's only worth it if you extend drain intervals! If you still change at 3k don't go synthetic!

 

I personally would have taken the free oil change, then switched myself at the next change interval...

 

Do you guys think that I bring my own syn Oil with me next oild change they would do it for free?? Since I have the 2 ys free oil change deal...

If the dealership is using Toyota oil, it is a semi synthetic made by Mobil 1. If you trust the dealership, I'd just use the 2 years of free oil changes. Most user including yourself are most likely not operating your engines in an environment that would benefit from synthetics. If you tow a lot or plan to off road a lot than it would make sense.

 

Do the synthetic oil. When you are in warranty, change oil when Toyota says to - 5k. When you get out of warranty, go to 10k. Use Mobil 1, extended mileage if you like.
I bought a new Audi and the oil change is 10k with synthetic out of the factory. Save yourself some money overall by extending the mileage. If you are concerned about engine wear, get an oil analysis by a lab to tell you how your engine is wearing.

Blackstone labs can analyze the performance of the oil and recommend the maximum safe change rate. On our 4.0 v6 I saw on bobistheoilguy a report with castrol gtx syntec that the oil was still protecting extremely well (better than most dyno on 2.5-3k change intervals) at over 8000miles.

That said I still go every 5k with syntec, at least during the warranty period. After that I'll send to blackstone and increase accordingly...

 

Why not just take the first oil change free and in 5000, put synthetic?

Seems like a no brainer.

 

I didn't do the free one because several people have posted issues such as they did not replace the oil filter, under or over filled, or even put the wrong weight in. I simply do not trust the dealer for anything more than absolutely necessary...

 

Get your Sharpie out, put a big fat "X" on top of the oil filter before you drop it off, and before you leave, pop the hood and take a look...

 

That's how most of those people found that out... Honestly it takes all of 20min top to do the change myself correctly every time, plus I get to take the chance to give everything a once over myself...

 

did my first oil change on the truck a few days ago. at around 2700, its been 6 months since I purchased; so, it was due. went fairly nicely thanks to the informative ppl and recommendations here - (chris4x4) guide really nice. The screw driver trick - glad to have known about this one! it's happy now with the mobil 1 synth. maybe it's just me but, it seems to even shift a little easier now.
