I don't understand. I'm sure it's something simple, but someone please clue me in....

    Tacoma:
    MPG:16/20
    Engine: 4.0L V6
    HP: 236
    Torque: 266
    Tow Cap: 3500 lbs
    Axle ration: 3.73
    Weight: 4155 lbs.

    4Runner:
    MPG:17/22
    Engine: 4.0L V6
    HP: 270
    Torque: 278
    Tow Cap: 5000 lbs
    Axle ration: 3.73
    Weight: 4750 lbs.

It appears as though they have the same engine and gear ratio, yet the 4Runner is heavier and gets better fuel economy and more power.

I'm no engineer, but that doesn't add up...

I thought SUVs usually got better gas mileage bc they don't have an open bed for the air flow to slow and affect gas mileage

The 2011 4runner has the "updated" 4.0 like the FJ. The Tacoma's a generation behind it right now. They seem to debut new 4runners a couple years before Tacomas

I figured it must be something engine related. The salesman told me that the Tacoma and the FJ have the same engine....

    Gear ratio is the same.

I haven't found engine codes on the internet. I probably haven't looked hard enough, but I have found the specs.

I've heard the thing about trucks and tailgates before, but I seriously doubt it makes that huge of a difference.

    4 Runner Engine is 4.0-liter DOHC 24-valve EFI dual independent VVT-i V6.

    Tacoma Engine is 4.0-liter DOHC 24-Valve with VVT-i V6.

4 Runner has more power, torque and better gas mileage due to this newer & more advanced engine design.
Car manufactures are increasing HP and fuel effiency.
Check this out: 2011 Ford F-150- "400 hp and more than 400 pounds-feet of torque. Gas mileage is expected to be at least 23 mpg on the highway".
    six-cylinder EcoBoost w/twin turbo's.

Haha you're pretty wrong there.. that air damn that we call a tail gate screws up about 5-8mpg.. and up to 10mpg on the highway...

I'm in the process of pattenting a technology that would allow us to easily make our beds aerodynamic or open them up and be usable quickly with the touch of a button, but i won't reveal too much yet

DRL mod with switch, rear spring TSB, trans TSB, tailgate mod, snug-top shell.
The Myth Busters proved that an open pickup with the tailgate up actually will get better mileage than with the tailgate down.

I have a camper shell and my mileage is not very good and it may even be the same as when I didn't have one.

can someone just edit "4Runner dual VVT-i and Tacoma Single VVT-i" into the OP?

I believe Tacomas only have VVT-i for intake valves, 4Runner has both intake and exhaust VVT-i
