Can I mix octanes?

If I run 87 and then 89 or 91 can I mix them? Maybe run 87 a few tanks then 89 or 91 as the third or fourth one, or just maybe top off a half-full. Octane is octane correct, or should I not mix them?

I thought as much. do I really need to ? I don't haul anything except a few people. Does it help mileage enough to be worth it? I have seen the milage forums , but I really did not get the answer. It was mostly go to 89 91 isn't worth it, but 89 is better. I have 87 or 91 available and I thought a blend would give me 89....Rich

 

It's really up to you. If you want a tad bit better performance then get the higher octane. If normal everyday driving then the lower octane will suffice IMO.

 

mixing them is fine, just be wary of the really high octanes. I used 93 in my motorcycle in Colorado and ended up having to drain the tank. Apparently 91+ doesn't get used alot at that particular gas station. It had water in it!

 

I would take engine life into account as well as performance. I think 89 is better for your engine life than 87 or 91+ due to the compression ratio. I use 89 just to be on the safe side, to me its worth the extra $2 per tank. But thats just my opinion, i doubt 89 will hurt your truck so its really up to you

 

If I had a V6, I would use 89 even though they say you don't have too. I agree with ndcouch - the V6's benifit, if only a little bit, from the 89 octane due to the higher compression ratios.

However, on my 2.7L 4 cylinder - it doesn't matter which one I use. It is made for the 87 octane.

 

Increasing the octane doesn't improve performance or burn any cleaner. The octane rating is just a resistance to burning rating. The higher the octane, the more compression needed to ignite it. Higher octanes are needed in high performance engines (sports cars).

The Tacoma is rated to use gasoline with octanes of 87 or higher. Anything higher than 87 and you're just giving more money to the oil companies.

 

87 octane is recomended for a compresion ration of 9:1 or lower. The V6 has a 10:1 compression ratio. since its right there onthe boarder i go ahead and fill up with the 89 just to be safe. If you do the math at only 10 cents more per gallon its only an extra $2 ever time i fill up. Its worth it for me
