I put off the cruiser rebuild and turbo until winter is over. Got plenty of winter time if you want to make Frank usable again. Been practicing my engine harness building, almost there with one to convert my Z to coil pack ignition and speed density with a MicroSquirt. Got some friends with IS300s and Altezza imports that probably have a 2J or two lying around.

    So wait..

Your swapping motors in your z? Didn't you just rebuild it? Or turboing it. Or turboing the LC?

And microsquirt eh? Thought you didn't like that one. I wanna run speedy density on the single cab turbo.

I'm dying to get Frank back. I just don't have a space to do it. The garage I have is too narrow Frank won't fit in it haha

Yeah I just rebuilt my motor and it has 5000mi on it and runs very well. I'm keeping it but I am putting on a turbo, already have all the parts for that, my Z is just a side project to keep me learning. I think of it as a low pressure way to learn things, which is why I'm building an engine harness and wiring it to the MicroSquirt first before I tackle the cruiser.

    0823191551_HDR.jpg

The VG33 in that pic I'm rebuilding for high boost for a friend whose Z motor finally started going south after a boost spike caused it to make 760hp on a tune and fuel system that was only really good to about 600 horse puppies. That's a quick project, already gapped rings and checked clearances on the bottom end. I expect to have that whole engine out of my garage and making power in the car before Sept is over.

Look at this badboy he picked up for that engine too...

    0828191315a.jpg

Yeah I don't really like it for anything I care much about. My Z's EFI is from the stone age and it's only a minor step up over that. The MicroSquirt cannot do sequential fuel injection on an engine with more than 2 cyls, it cannot do direct COP ignition on an engine with more than 4 cyls (three if you want all of your binary IOs), it has no built in knock monitoring, it cannot do fuel trimming (okay it sort of can but only when told to for purposes of changing the basemap permanently), it can only directly address high impedance injectors, it has no boost control abilities. It has lots of software capabilities like a standalone should but has very limiting hardware restrictions. It's still a step up because it can recognize boost and even correct for barometric changes in atmosphere. It will still fuel much more accurately than my old ECU after I tune it, but it's missing things I think are important for any rig that's more than just a hobby driver. It's ideal for something simple like my Z, which has few sensors and is really only going to be used as a daily on road vehicle with a few hundred HP. Which is why I'm going for a Haltech Elite 2500 in the cruiser, I want to be able to have everything precisely how it needs to be and all centrally monitored and controlled (it has lots of built in fallbacks and safeties for boost and hardware failure situations)

Suppose that cat is outta the bag. Yeah, the HG is currently blown on it, but it is minor and drive-able for a while. The cruiser is a bucket list vehicle for me, it's really what I wanted way back when I got into Yotas so I'm doing everything as right as I can on it. I'm going to take that engine down entirely to the empty block and rebuild it fresh with boost in mind. 2J head studs from ARP and a mild port on the intake side while the head is being checked for warps and cracks. Then it is getting a Borg Warner S369 with a .68 AR housing and a buddy of mine is making a log intake manifold for me that can accommodate a larger 2J aftermarket throttle body and 2J idle control motor, that way I can delete all the other useless shit on the intake and have it be nice and simple. I'm taking this engine entirely out of the early 90s and going coil on plug and full sequential injection and of course speed density metering because MAFs and VAFs are fucking nuisances of a bygone era. I wanted a super relaible and modern setup, something I can tune to run more efficiently than it currently does, that necessitates a Haltech Elite and so I figured if I was going that far why shouldn't it make a couple hundred more horse puppies too so I had a friend help me spec out the turbo.

All that said, I want to see Frank back on the trail as well and swapping in a 2J (while a complete pain in the ass because of space restraints) sounds like too much fun to pass up on.

Been building a turbo D21 with a friend the past couple weeks actually...

Oh, and the guy that's going to make my intake for the cruiser just finished making one for this... A GT86 with some balls

Well this is an exciting post on many levels haha

Sounds like some fun work man!

I really wish I had a better garage...I have half a turbo kit for the single cab now. Was thinking of doing the 2500 for it as well cause...why not haha

I didn't realize the LC motor had potential for 2jz swappable parts. I find it crazy that the 4l motor in it has a smaller tb than a 2j but..then again I guess not. That thing boosted should be super sweet! Bummer about the hg though.

2j in Frank has long been a wish list item. Not sure if it'll happen or not really. Be stupid fun if I did. Space is a bit of an issue for sure. But maybe doing a custom core support like what Brett did could help with that.

The 4.5L is basically a bigger 2J with less aggressive head design. The ARP studs fit perfect thankfully and the new style Toyota head gasket is MLS. The stock 2J throttle body is probably about the same size as mine TBH, but lots of companies make bigger aftermarket ones for the 2J so I was going to use one of those instead. That lets me still use a Toyota TPS. Head gasket is a bummer, but not totally. I've wanted an excuse to tear it down and clean it up like new since I got it. This is just a great opportunity to sort everything at once. All the old seals, all the crusty wiring, remove all the emissions trash that doesn't do jack squat (I'll still run cats), all the coolant hoses that are 26 years old... Stuff that I need to take care of before I trust it to take me to nowhere and back anyway.

It has been fun work, I can't believe I ever left Spokane. Thankfully all my friends are still here and still up to all that car shenanigans.
