Hmm I don't think theres a 16" wheel that fits mine. Or maybe I'm just thinking of steel wheels. An aluminum one might fit. I could not get a 16" steel wheel to fit.

I put the 35s on there. I bought the truck stock with 30,000 miles. I think my brakes are the factory brakes. I just don't think a 16" steel wheel fits them

Not all manufacturers of steelies are the same. Some say that summit steelies will rub and others run steelies made by wheeler's offroad with no issues.

Really interesting thread and really neat idea. I think it is best to assume that you know your husband and that he will truly appreciate what you have done for him (as you have stated).

I think that while there is lots that you can do upgrading the wheels and the tires would make the most visual impact. You can do other things, of course, but the wheels and the rims will have the biggest "wow" factor. The other stuff will kind of be minor by comparison.

    That said, two suggestions:

First, you mentioned that he has a buddy who has a truck that he really likes. One thing you could do is mirror those wheel and tire choices. Might be fun and would give them something to have a good time about. Just a thought.

Second, not sure where you are but if you are anywhere in the West maybe visit a specialty shop that focuses on wheels and tires for Tacomas. This stuff is confusing and I find it pretty hard with he sizing, offsets, lift, etc. You, however, seem to know more about it than I do. But rather than order direct you might have better luck visiting a shop or two and walking through your options. Plus, you will have a place he can go back to with questions or follow up, etc. I know personally I would rather visit a shop and talk to people far more knowledgable about this stuff than I am (which, to be frank, is nearly everyone!). Plus, what custom shop wouldn't want to bend over backwards to help on such a great request?

One last suggestion. You really can't go wrong with the black TRD rims. I've been looking at wheels forever and keep coming back to them.

Best of luck to you ! Can't wait to see pictures of what you decide.

I like the Fuel wheels too. My sister has some on a Wrangler, and she's trying to talk me into those. will definitely consider that.

I like the current wheels on the truck. You got allot of chrome accents on it.
grill, rear bumper, steps , mirrors, etc.
AVS In Channel weather guards are really nice to go with the new tinted windows.
Purchased mine from "Auto Anything" shipped to your door.

If anyone touched my truck but me I’d have an aneurysm. Even if they did work I wanted. So I’d really caution you against doing anything to the truck. Especially since you mention Discount Tire. I don’t want those buffoons touching new wheels (I’ve had miserable experience with that company).

If you know exactly what he wants buy it and put it in the garage. Don’t have it installed.

I’d really flip if my truck was worked on without my knowledge and I didn’t know who did it. Like really flip. Like sell the truck flip because I can’t trust its safe.

I also would go smaller on the wheels. 18” wheels are ugly and give a poor ride. Also I’d stay away from lug centric wheels. Buy wheels made for a Toyota hub.
If not... I bet Discount Tire won’t touch them. They have to be road force balanced and cannot be balanced and mounted at any shop.

Good point. At least if he doesn’t like rim choice he could always return and get what he likes. New tires you can’t go wrong with a couple out there.but rather save paying for installation fees you mgiht regret paying for :notsure: Wildpeaks!

@PackCon , As the OP stated, her husband knows and is excited about it, so I don't think he's going to be leaving her. And your comment about Discount might be true for your area, but I, and my family, have had nothing but great treatment from multiple discount locations here in Washington. Multiple sets of rims and tires purchased, balanced, and repaired. They've handled swapping ATV tires for me multiple times without damaging my rims (which even I know is tough). They've even swapped a single ATV tire and rim I brought in for free knowing it would be quick and easy. Sorry you've had a bad experience with them, though!

Quick progress pic for those keeping up. Deployment was extended, but hubs will be back in a few weeks to see his taco! I ended up going with Ballistic wheels and Firestone destination MT2s. Super excited to show him :) I have a couple more little things I’ll be doing but glad to check tires/wheels/leveling off the list and I’m very pleased with the result so far! 41149B20-A767-4872-9E12-16201E1779CE.jpg

What an outstanding job -- and a thoughtful gift. Bravo to you! Do you mind sharing where you eventually purchased the tires? Just curious if you went to a local shop or ordered through a larger online place. Oh, and what other things are you going to add to the mix? Thanks for the inspiration.

Thank you!! For tires I went to a local chain place. I was offered an excellent discount, which is why I ended up going with a Bridgestone product, since I originally wanted Falkens. :) I’m still going to change out the interior lights for LEDs, it’s going today for more tint, and I’m thinking about looking for a new cover for the bed. We’ve both hated the current one from day 1, so I’d like to find him one that’s a little more versatile instead of us having to take it off every time we need to haul anything. (It’s coming off today to haul hay, in fact). Hoping to find something more low profile for aesthetics.

Eta: I’ve also tossed around the idea of swapping the OEM running boards for some black nerf bars, but I’m undecided on that.

May be consider losing the leveling kit in favor of Bilstein adjustables and coils.

I personally think having the chrome grill surround swapped to color matched paint will make a bigger difference than the chrome step bars.
You've got this! Looking good so far.
 I also dig the AVS In-Channel window visors from Auto Anything.
