I am running a Volant CAI on my 2018 Tacoma TRD SPORT 4x4 and keep getting cel for MAF whenever I accelerate really fast. Do I need a Performance MAF. Just curious if anyone else is having a problem if they are running any kind of aftermarket CAI?

Try cleaning the MAF with approved sensor cleaner let dry and reinstall. Clear codes then go for a ride

This actually inadvertently speaks volumes to how dumb CAIs are especially with off road vehicles. The fact that your MAF will always be dirty should raise red flags for anyone with half a brain...if that much dust is getting on the tiny sensor, how much is going into your engine? Hint- a lot.

Just so you know your Tacoma comes from the factory with a CAI...how dumb is that? The sensor was probably not installed properly in the new intake as any leak in the suction side of the engine will throw a code...maybe dirty maybe missing the o-ring maybe loose connections.

Cleared the code twice and cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner. The cel light only comes on when I really stab it. The Volant CAI I have has the 100,000 mile dry filter. Only happened once in a while on my 2012 Tacoma 4.0L v-6 w/Volant CAI. I did some investigating and everything I found says the stock MAF can't handle the volume of air from the Volant CAI (and I don't even have the scoop on it yet.) This is happening around town and pulling my Bass Boat.

Everything I found says I should install a "Performance MAF" @ $130-$160 to handle the volume of air from the CAI.

I ran my 2017 TRDOR with a volant CAI for a while, never had a CEL with it. But it had a crazy bad stumble at about 1800rpm. It was a huge gaping hole in the power band, would fall on its face nearly every time I was giving it moderate throttle.

What's weird is when I would pull the battery cable to reset fuel trims, it would go away. The truck would run great for about 50 miles and then the stumble would come back.

Eventually I took the intake off and put the stock one back on to see if the stumble went away and it did. Have yet to experience it at anywhere near the same intensity while running stock. Yes the truck still hesitates, but with the volant CAI it felt like a straight up miss.

I want to put the volant back on, but it severely reduces driveability due to the stumble. So I dunno what to do.

After talking to Volant, I just unhooked my negative cable from battery for about 30 minutes to let the computer reset itself and no more CEL's. I have never had a problem with accelerating at any RPM's. I love my Volant CAI especially when pulling my Bass boat. Also if you do get a CEL Volant informed me that the system is taking in unmetered air between the MAF and the throttle body, one way to check is use something with smoke like a cigar, vape, etc and blow the smoke in where the breather hose hooks up to see if you have any leaks at the MAF or where the intake tube hooks up to the throttle body, this is done with the motor off. I didn't need to because resetting the computer fixed my problem. I also ran a Volant on my 2012 4.0L V-6 with no problems.

That cannot be true as people here have tested these trucks on the dyno with no filter at all, a Volant cai is not going to flow more than that.

For the record I did a battery disconnect several times with my Volant installed and found the driveability to improve significantly for only a few dozen miles. I hope it fixed all of your problems! I'm going to reinstall mine soon.

Why would you reinstall something that proved to be your issue?

Because I paid money for it, it improves the look in the engine bay, and I like the volume it adds to the engine noise. Not a lot of people on this forum have reporting running the Volant on 3rd gen, but knowing someone else has it and doesn't have the same symptoms is encouraging.

.... So it's a cool looking noise maker that makes your truck run crappy?

    I'm glad you understand.

Obviously if it's still doing it, I don't plan to leave it on. But possible something I did during the first install caused it. I dunno.
