How much does the dealer charge to change the transmission fluid?

Going to be hitting 100K around the end of the year, so I know it's going to be that time soon. I hear that the transmission is a sealed unit, which pretty much eliminates the desire from this driveway mechanic to change it myself. So, how much are the stealerships charging to change transmission fluid?

Thanks, I just took a look at it. Doesn't appear too difficult; I'll have to call the dealer and figure out how much I would save and if it's worth the hassle or not. I'm mechanically inclined, but things that are a pain in the ass I like to pass on to the mechanics.

 

Super easy to do man. Don't be scared off by jumping the OBD port. After that it is just a series of shifts and waiting to the right temp to check. But at 100K, you might want the flush. not just a drain/fill. Which has been done on here but I cannot comment on it.

 

you could do 3 drain and fills,that would clean it up as much as a flush.it would take 9.6 quarts,and cost less than 75.00 bucks.and i believe toyota changed the interval from 100k to 60k.i drain and fill mine every 15 k,fluid stays nice and clean that way.

 

x2, the dealer won't just drain and refill, they flush oil through the torque convertor.

I've actually heard some mixed reviews about changing the transmission oil at higher mileage if it hasn't been done before. If you're high in mileage and the transmission oil hasn't been changed, the grit in the oil is actually what makes the plates in the torque convertor spin together. If you put clean fluid in, the torque convertor may not work anymore. This is more of a tip for POS trucks and transmissions on their last leg but just a word of caution, I wouldn't worry about it with yours.

 

I called my dealer and they wanted $179.95 to change the fluid.

 

that sounds about right,when we flush with the machine it takes 12 quarts of ATF.

 

My local dealers don't flush anymore, they used to but not sure why the change. They used to have them but don't recommend that anymore. They quoted me $89 for a drain and refill, about 3 qts of fluid.

 

Not all dealers flush with a machine. When you price this service, it is important to know what service you are getting a price quote for. Many service advisors who don't know jack about cars will often refer to a drain and fill as a flush as well.

Be sure to know what you are paying for.

I have always done my own maintenence on all the trucks/cars I've had for the last 15 years....cause I like to know its done right and I'm cheap. Toyota has scared me away from this one with their sealed tranny though. I REALLY dont want to mess this one up, so I'm taking it in. They said around 200 to drain/fill, drain/fill, drain/fill...they do this three times I think is what they said, and dont do a flush with a machine.
Does this sound about right? I know its kinda pricey but so is not doing perfectly and ruining a $4K tranny.
Also, is everyone reading this thread feeling the 100K interval on changing the fluid? I plan on getting mine done at 75K. I saw that one of you does it every 15K That seems like a waste of time and oil to me....but definately, to each their own. The faster oil runs out, the faster I can start driving a hydrogen powered vehicle I guess....so use it up

Mine was 194.06 including tax. Debated on doing this myself, but just did not have the time when it needed to be done.

 

It's 2023 now and my Toyota dealer wants to charge me $449.87 to do a trans fluid exchange. WTF? I KNOW IT'S BEEN LIKE 13 YEARS SINCE THEY CHARGED $179 BUT COME ON $450?
HOW CAN THEY EXPECT ANYONE TO DO MAINTENANCE ON THEIR VEHICLES WITH THE DEALERSHIP WHEN THEY CHARGE THESE TYPES OF PRICES PRICES. WE JUST PAID $385 FOR ONE COIL AND THE LABOR. THEY ALSO WANTED TO DO A COOLING SERVICE ON THE SYSTEM FOR $247.38. SO WHAT DOES THAT INTEL I'M WONDERING... DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT A FUEL OPTIMIZER SERVICES IS CUZ THEY WANT TO CHARGE $214 FOR THAT.

 

Once you have done a drain and fill, you will never take it in again. It is an easy process to do. Just get a quart bottle hand pump that screws on to the bottle and you can pump most of the fluid out in a few minutes. Or get a long plastic hose and a funnel and do it from the top.

Do it once every 25-30K and your good to go and keep going.

 

great way to change all the fluid out, is to disconnect the line that goes to the tranny from the cooler. so you turn on the truck, and it shoots the fluid out into your bucket with a hose. once it drains about 3-4 quarts, turn off the truck and add new fluid thru the access hole on the side of the trans. repeat 3 times and you are golden.

 

Forget the fuel treatment. That’s pure profit for the dealership.
The cooling system is simple, a 22mm 6-point socket makes it super simple to break loose the drain plug on the radiator.

The transmission can be tricky.
You can drain the fluid and measure what comes out.
Put that much back in.

That’s not the best way, as you don’t really know for if it’s full.
But it will be close enough. That is, if you weren’t low to begin with.

 

yep. I run funnel from the top. I run a scan tool for temp ck and drain, fill several times. Last fill is new washers and final level check. For me it is every 50,000. Just like previously mentioned, there is a ton of info and videos out there on it. Agree also on staying away flushes and getting detailed info on what the dealership is actually providing. I believe if you can change your veh’s other fluids you can do the transmission. If in doubt though maybe look around at other japanese car mechanics. Might be less expense.

 

I had the transmission flushed at a Toyota dealer and they did a terrible job. ATF fluid everywhere, thought one of the AT lines wasn't connected. Did they fill the AT with the proper amount of fluid? Who knows?
If you can't do it yourself, go to a transmission shop.
