10000 mile oil change?

I have 6500 on mine right now but toyota says it doesn't need an oil change until 10000 miles.. what has everyone else done? Should I go get one on my own or just wait for the 10000 mile service? What's the best thing for the engine it's a 4 cyl.

Don’t take this the wrong way but you’re essentially questioning the engineering conclusion of an auto manufacturer based on the opinions of random strangers on the internet.

 

Don't forget about the time factor. Oil should be changed at 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. I am coming up on 1 year and only have 3,000 miles on the truck, so they will change the oil under toyotacare at about 3200 miles.

 

Manufacturer's oil change requirements have changed over the years as both oil and engine technology have advanced.

I believe the oil change recommendation of my first car back in the mid seventies was 2500 miles.
It's a good idea to follow the manufacturer's requirement/recommendation.

 

This right here... I did mine at 8k and 12 months because I didn't drive much last year. Already coming up on #2 because I've put another 8k on the truck in the 4 months since.

 

Just change it either 10k or 1 year as they recommend

If you want to change it earlier, and it helps you sleep at night, then change earlier.
I did my first at 5k, just for that. I'll probably switch to the factory recommendation from here on out.

 

They told me the same, now that warranty is out they recommend 5000 mile changes. Go figure. 10000 should be fine, or yearly.

I went with oil changes at 5k and 10k, and will change again at 15k. It's not that pricey, and is not bad for the engine but good for the peace of mind.

 

Just do what it says. My Porsche came from the factory with a 15K first oil change. That thing had Mobile 1 OW40.

After 24 months, 24k miles of Toyota Care, I do 7,500 miles between oil changes for piece of mind.

 

the dealership recommends that i come back at 5k for my first oil change. if you really want to see take a sample of your oil and send it to a lab. that will tell you among other things the percent of protection left in the oil.

 

Every 10k, for the last 12 services. Sometimes that was once a month, other times every 3 months. Truck runs like new still. It’s cheap enough to do every 5k if you want though.

 

If you want some piece of mind, when changing your oil get a sample and get it tested. In my lexus gs350 I use 0-20w Mobil 1 and after the report with tbn, they suggest going to 15k before changes.

 

I'd change it in the first 1000 miles, then at 5k, then 5-10k after. IMO, the first couple are the most important to get the break in particles out. After that, it's up to you. 5k is probably overkill, but as long as you're not surpassing 10k, I wouldn't worry. If you plan to drive it to 200k+ miles, doing every 5k isn't a bad idea. Oil is cheap! Engines are not.

At the very least, do it every 10k. Lots of reports out there of 100k mile 3rd gens on 10k interval that are just fine.

 

Ain’t no way in the Fn world I’d go 10,000... engineers more like marketing as in lower vehicle maintenance. I’ll keep dropping at 5k in my F150 and might even start doing it 3-4K.

If you not doing it everytime you go to walmart you're doing it wrong. They suggest walmart trips as a good unit of interval measuring.
