Refresh before sale?

I have a 2010 prerunner that is in great mechanical condition (113K miles) and runs like a top but the exterior and interior have seen better days. The clear coat has failed on the hood and roof and there are plenty of scratches throughout. The plastic trim has gouges and is nowhere near fresh, and the interior is just as worn.

That said I am considering whether refreshing the car with a paint job and replacement of plastic trim and new front seats would be worth it to improve the sale price I could get or whether it is better to sell as is to someone who may need a work truck or project.

Thanks for any insight into the costs I could incur and the payback on the investment.

 

Not worth fresh paint or new seats - I doubt you’d get your money back out of it.

It’s still a nearly 10 year old vehicle. It’s served you well, still runs like a top as you say so just sell a reliable as is truck.

I don't think you'll recoup the cost of a repaint. A quality paint job is going to cost over three grand.

Interior parts can be found at salvage yards, otherwise you're going to spend a lot on parts from the dealer.

Have you had a detailer look at it?

Thanks for the responses guys. I will def look into having it detailed but the two previous owners used it s a work truck for many years and most of the issues are well beyond some elbow grease. The clear coat failure and rock chips in the hood are the most notable.

Thats said I figured as much that a paid job, particularly a cheap one, would not be worth it and if I don't go down that route, then the plastic trim and seat replacement wouldn't be worth it as well.

I may try and get my post count up higher and list it here as it really will treat whoever the next owner is really well and someone may have the time and wherewithal to get the cosmetics tended to.

I would detail it and get it as clean as you can. You only stand to increase its value.

 

Or do it yourself.

No,just wash it.If you wanted a higher resale value,then you should of been keeping your truck nice to begin with.

 

Clean it up
Take it to carmax to get an idea of what it’s worth
Raise the price a couple grand
Post on Craigslist in Spanish.

 

What is your reason for selling it? It’s mechanically sound and only has cosmetic issues.

 

Another vote for getting it detailed. I manage a fleet of construction equipment (roughly 100 pickup trucks), and when we get a new foreman coming in we generally get the truck assigned to him detailed. Beat up work trucks come back looking amazing! Would definitely help before the sale. We pay around $300 a truck. You could easily recover that cost, a new paint job, probably not.

 

While I appreciate the insight, I inherited the truck when a family member passed away six months ago.

It is an access cab and can't fit a car seat in the back. As mentioned above I received the truck when a family member passed 6 months ago and I sold my commuter when I got it. My wife does most of the kid toting and somewhere along the way she realized I can't take the kids anywhere in mine. I considered Keeping it as a third car because who doesn't need a good weekend work truck but I am starting to back away from that. May still decide on doing just that depending on what I can get for it.

If rear facing car seat, yeah I’m with you it’s not going to fit. But if your kids are in forward facing car seats and you’re short enough where the front seats don’t have to be slid back too far it is possible to make it work. I managed to fit a full sized Britax car seat in the rear of my former 2003 Tacoma Xtracab, and that version was smaller and didn’t have rear half doors.

 

unfortunately we are at 18 months and one week old so we are rear facing for the foreseeable future. Still kicking around the idea of getting a third car so I can keep the truck since it does run so well and has some sentimental value. that said It would be nice to get a nicer daily with the money I could get from the truck instead of going for something reliable boring and cheap or unreliable fun and cheap.

 

If it were me, I would keep it. You always need a truck for something. Especially since It was inherited from a loved one. If I had to bet, after you sold it, you would wish you hadn’t.

 

Put minimal insurance on it, and get a more kid friendly vehicle. Keep it As a backup. That is what I just did in a very similar situation.

 

At only 113k Miles given it has been properly maintained, has a lifetime of service left in it. But if you do sell it, it’s all profit since it was inherited. Put that money into a 4 door Tacoma.

 

I am definitely considering keeping it and have only just this week considered selling it. I don't really need a truck but I can certainly find a way to use the bed at least every other week. If I get rid of it I don't doubt I will find myself wishing I hadn't.

That said as you know kids are expensive so I am having a hard time justifying throwing several thousand more at a daily when I could trade out and not be out of pocket.
