10000 mile oil change?

I do change out tires well b4 they’re worn, you won’t catch me running on low tread.

 

Damn, 10k miles a month? You drive a lot! Whats your current mileage? Any issues ?

 

Yeah, I have a little over 124k as of this week. It would be a lot higher but I don’t drive as much now as I used to. I went through a set of STT Pro’s in 9 months, that’s the only issue lol. Just regular maintenance, fluid Changes and whatnot. Trucks solid.

 

What does "piece of mind" even mean?
Does it mean you will "feel" better?
A machine does not care how you feel. A truck does not do "better" if you are happy. It does not comfort you when you are sad. It does not perform better when you accelerate maintenance schedules lol.

Pay attention to what the guys who designed it say, not "piece of mind" guys like the one I quoted say.

 

124k is quite a bit. Im glad to hear your taco is holding up great! That gives me hope. A lot of members here shit on the 3rd gen.

I only have 11k haha, and i had it for over a year. I drive work van during the week.

 

I kind of like the 10k oil changes. It's easy to remember. Hell, I wish they recommended 20k.

 

Really? Engineers jacking off? Do me a favor... stop for a second and tell me what you would have if it weren't for engineers... let me get you started:
You wouldn't have any electronics, or electricity, or any power.
You wouldn't have roads, or bridges, or any infrastructure whatsoever.

You would be fucking in a cave or a log home, heated by a fireplace and still riding a horse or walking.
And you would be hunting with a stick or spear because guns? Engineers design those too.

“Peace of mind” means feeling secure in that you’re taking good care of a complex piece of machinery. I did not wait until 10k because I could see small metal shavings in the oil--there are some vehement arguments here about whether that is normal or not and whether they are harmful or not. My wife’s previous three Camrys that we bought new never had small metal shavings visible in the oil. Hence, I chose to change it at 5k. With a coupon from the dealer I get the synthetic oil and filter changed for $40. I'm not really interested in some demonstration of Sayre's Law, so feel free to maintain your own schedule.

Yeah a lot of them do, but ask yourself if they really have any quantifiable experience... or are they just talking shit. There’s numerous high mileage 3rd gens running around without any issues, mine has been beat on and not treated all that great but I have maintained it well. Hell most of the 2nd gen guys you catch here spewing that bs don’t have 6 digit mileage yet.

What you should do is send in a sample to Blackstone if you think something is amiss. Why? Because what if 5K is too long? Let engineers and triboligists tell you the proper solution.

 

As long as you go get in your truck, use a chainsaw and log splitter to cut your fuel and have a generator to power your lights...

It’s marketing/sales driven not engineering that is dictating what they are telling you get over it, but please keep informing on what engineers do cause having three of em in my family I have no idea... so yeah 10,000 mile oil changes

 

I’ve only owned my Taco for a month so I’ve never changed the oil (it’s got 1,500 miles total). Also, I only work on Euro cars but I am a professional mechanic and have been for 15 years. Not that it means a whole lot but a little back ground for what’s its worth is I do everything from regular maintenance to literally rebuilding old oil/air cooled Porsche engines and everything in between.

Personally I’m not going to follow the 10k interval. After years of experience and seeing what long interval oil changes do to the cars I work on I’ve decided to do oil changes every 5k. I recommend the same to my customers and most follow it. Believe me I’m not retiring early from oil services. I’m not going to risk damaging a customers car (accidents happen, on the road, in the shop or what ever) to make a lousy 60-80 bucks profit when I could be selling other stuff like brake flushes or other services (I truly believe in regular oil changes). Anyway, the reason being is not that the oil can’t lubricate (it pretty much will for ever) it’s a matter of getting the old oil out that contains blow by gasses plus tired and worn out additives in it. Yes, 10k-15k intervals “work” but to me it’s like eating healthy, it can’t hurt and it’s worth trying. I will add Japanese cars tend to burn a hell of a lot LESS oil and don’t seem to get as dirty as fast as most Euro cars do, so maybe it’s less critical on things like the Tacoma. But, by changing the oil you’re not saving the mechanical part of the engine. It’s more the oil seals, timing chains, plastic sliders and PCV system that seem to benefit most. Honestly you’ll never wear out a modern engine if you use the correct oil and never run it critically low. It’s all the other systems and components that go bad. I would consider 6,500 or something but keeping the interval at 5,10,15 and so on is also easy to keep track of.

Non of what I said is scientific but a great number of cars that DO the 5k or so interval generally have a lot less timing chain rattle on start up, carbon build up (very critical to use the correct spec oil and NO Jiffy Lube type places, sorry) less oil leaks, less high psi fuel pump issues, less carbon on valves for direct injected engines, it’s just beneficial for sure. Lastly these things only matter past 80-100k miles, if you don’t keep cars that long then who cares honesty.

I do mine every 5k, or sometimes a hair sooner that's when the oil change light comes on. Maybe go by that?

 

I get my tires rotated every 5k so WTH get the oil done too as part of a $60 package deal at my buddies shop.

That's just a maint. reminder light, not neccessarily oil change. The owners manual pretty well lays it out what is required and when.
