If you are buying an automatic, get a ranger if you really need a 4x4/truck bed. If you need a truck bed but AWD will be fine, the Ridgeline is actually pretty nice and comfortable... coming from a car you might really like it.

IMO the Tacoma is only the best buy if you want a manual transmission or are really worried about resale/long term reliability.

If you don't need a truck bed or 4WD and really just need a bigger vehicle, I'd go with a manual Subaru Forester and I promise you won't regret it. I miss mine all the time.

^Lol. Like I said, it will probably be a 2014 or 2015 V6 2nd gen. I drove a stick 2014 V6 and it felt fantastic. Too bad they cost as much as a one year old 3rd gen. My ONLY experience with a Frontier was a rental last year, and I wasn't impressed at all. Of course, that was a base, automatic V6, so I need to drive a stick and see how they are. I won't buy a new Toyota because I won't pay for a warranty I don't trust.

I think the 2nd and 3rd gens are basically the exact same in manual form besides the visibility is better out of the 2nd gen but I like the overall look of the 3rd gen better.

I think u just got really unlucky with your Taco and that sucks. You are right basically no reason to buy a used Tacoma which makes 2nd gen not the best buy (assuming you are trying to get something under 100k miles). If reliability is your concern I deff would not buy a Nissan over a Toyota though lol

Personally, I'm waiting to see if they bring the TJ to the US ... that thing looks super handy.

Yes, but the 2nd gen has the 4.0 liter engine. My main complaint about my 2017, the single thing I couldn't live with, was the POS engine. Everything else I could deal with. Yep, the 2nd gen is pretty dated compared to the 3rd, but again, that engine. The one I drove was smooth as heck, had bottom end torque, and lots of power. And the stick was very nice too.

Is this really a thing anymore? Like, the robots don’t care, and complicated items like the MT are assembled elsewhere by other companies. I could see getting the doors to line up might be a Friday thing, but I guarantee all of our trucks have an Aisin transmission assembled on a Tuesday, a Borg Warner diff assembled on a Thursday, with an Engine built up on a Monday, and the whole truck put together on a Saturday night shift with a dash sub-assembly made on a Wednesday.

    Just my thoughts.

I mean yeah, I'm not in love with the 3.5 but I don't notice too much of a diff between it and the old 4.0. I actually didn't mind the 2.7 on the 2nd gens too... on the 3rd gens I remember it feeling very sluggish but maybe it was all in my head.

I wasnt being really serious, since we all know the assembly lines are pretty much all automated and like you said, there are quite a few components that toyota doesnt even make.

The guy just had really shitty luck with his taco. Sad

Well, how does that even happen? How can you have 95%+ of the trucks be perfectly fine, and the remaining 5% be total disasters?

I've concluded that it's not really final assembly that counts. It's poor quality control at all the contractors they use for the sub-assemblies. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe not.

Maybe the stars aligned and all the sub assemblies were made on a Monday morning, and put together by that new guy Steve. Fuckin Steve.

No offense but I’m well aware of the truck and functions. I’ve owned it since Oct 2015. The trans is funky as shit. I also own an ATSV with a funky trans issue. No car is perfect. We had a few minor issues with the truck but nothing majorly mechanically wrong. I wouldn’t buy another however. I’m hoping a tune wakes this thing up and makes me change my mind. There’s thing I like and things I hate about it.

I regret getting the sport over the TRD. Listen to this man.

My main reasoning was the useless hood and color matched pieces. I’ve never wheeled my rig and knew it was just going to be a DD, but I should have still went with the OR.

I went from a Corolla to a Tacoma. At first I noticed the difference in gas mileage but didn't care after I started to really enjoy driving my Tacoma. It gets 21-25 MPG. Corollas and Civics are great cars but driving a Tacoma was a great change for me.

I think if you just listened to your truck and respected HER feelings, that would solve a lot of problems in your relationship.

And spent a little more time servicing the Taco, if you know what I mean.
