Taking out the rear drive shaft. need to remove the bolts from the front and rear flanges . Nothing wrong with the joint, just need room to drop the tank.

 

The low point to the right of the sun is muir pass...gotta hike 25 miles or so to get there...not sure of any trails...download the fs maps that always works for me

 

Oh okay, I thought you mean the pinion flange nut. I never used a torque wrench on the DS bolts, tight and then a bit tighter was enough

Hiking's no biggie but I meant some fire roads or something, catch some nice views.

If I were to go next week, I'd be going solo. I don't normally do long hikes by myself unless I know the area well.

 

Why'd you need to crack open the diff on a trail?

 

We try and do a proper camping trip every other year. This year was the dusy basin loop. Pretty epic, but brutal. Im game for backpacking. Just need a couple days off work afterwords to get my energy back lol.

It exploded after all the threads were pulled out of the pinion nut and the pinion was pulled into the case at 55+MPH and locked up the front end solid.

 

Hiking by yourself is the way to go, don’t gotta wait for the slow people

 

Right, but why would you need to open it on a trail already knowing it's broken? Nothing really user serviceable in there...
