Couldn't you just unbolt the driveshaft and the CV's?

 

I checked out a place by bishop solo that was well worth it. Not too difficult and will get you up to high altitude with toms of camping options and a few lakes to check out. Look up coyote flats by bishop pass. Drove up the 395 for three days before the backpacking trip

 

Tube is easy, I'm talking about splitting the case.

 

True. Unless you are the slow one because the dog is always 10’ ahead pulling you to go faster

 

It's all user serviceable, nothing special in there, just some gears and other assorted iron. Can't drive with a locked up diff, he removed the innards but the center carrier so he could be 2WD and not worry about his wheel bearings coming apart without CVS.

 

He did unbolt the DS, but you can't drive an ADD truck without CVs, they need the pressure from the CV nut to hold the flange and bearing assembly together

 

I mean you're not going to whip out the SST's to do a ring and pinion swap.

So you couldn't run 4WD knuckles without the CV's?

 

I thought he just left it parked at his parents till he sent it to a shop

 

Is this why manual hubs are popular?

 

He did get a new diff from somewhere eventually but this was done to get off the trail and back into his country and then back home first.

 

I think they aren’t popular because you wear out everything less and it’s suppose to give better mpg

 

No, they're popular because they're easier to implement when making a 4WD out of a prerunner. The ADD is stronger

 

Yeah it was my diff I sent him lol. And I thought he blew it up on a normal road

 

I should tack on that ADD is stronger on the tacos, on most other things manual hubs are stronger or a full lockout stub
